I suppose the takeaway could be that the thing that a person assumes would draw people in may not be the real thing, and serves as a reminder to examine reality before assuming what will work for your goal. The main issue, so far, is the ‘protests’ are meek and lacklustre. It’s just a bunch of people hanging out, or taking a stroll together, while some of them carry signs.

Probably in the process for a green card after marrying and changing status, which easily costs between $7k-$10k and now takes years thanks to Trump fucking the immigration process. It wasnt fast before either, but now its a “who knows how long it will take” process
The application fee for family green card was about $2k when we did it and the lawyer was another $2k. Temporary status gets updated as soon as the paperwork is processed and you get a letter. That’s what I’m wondering here - is this another escalation of deporting those with legal status, or what? That seems like an important detail on leave out.

I’ve got context.
That area is a parking lot by the ICE facility. So it doesn’t appear to just be any old photo of a man crying in a parking lot. Both the color and density of the bricks, distance of the grass, color of the parking lines, and placement of the door, which I initially was led to believe was a pole based on the angle, are all a match, though whatever’s partially obscuring the second photo in the original post is something that was likely added later on, as the most recent street view photos are from about 3-4 months ago, give or take.
Both reverse image searches on the attached photos, and facial recognition scans via PimEyes of his face turn up no results.
I was able to find two additional photos of him from this post on Bluesky, one from behind talking to officers, and another of him sitting on the ground but with a different angle of his face visible.
I found an additional photo from what appears to be the same poster on Facebook this time, showing more of his face. Still no facial rec match, though. (PimEyes doesn’t search social media for privacy reasons though, so there’s a chance it’s just missing him on there)
The org that seems to have the largest swath of the photos, and initially did the reporting, is Humanizing Through Story, who’s mission is to capture documentary-style photos of immigrants and refugees in an attempt to humanize them.
Their site links to an Instagram post by their account. That post claims that “This is what was reported to me by a community member who offered aid and resources to him on site.”
So to wrap that all up:
- He is a real person (i.e. not AI generated)
- He was actually near to the ICE facility in a parking lot
- The photos taken of him were from an organization known to take such photos, not just a random bystander
- The claimed path of the narrative was: The guy himself > Community member > Organization, and the screenshotted post is just a copy of their original post but without the context of where the information came from or any link back to the organization that actually took the photos or gathered the information.
So basically this hasn’t been proven false, hasn’t been proven true, but has supporting evidence for at least major parts of the narrative.
In essence, its not a smoking gun but could be a compelling story if packaged correctly and the relevant information was gotten more concretely.
More than that, it seems usual sources aren’t debunking nor covering it.

One human trait that transcends politics is a general willingness to uncritically accept propaganda that confirms one’s personal beliefs. It’s how people are so easily manipulated, yet many seem not to care as long as they’re being manipulated down a path that seems agreeable to them.
So do you think this is real or not?
The only mentions online are on social media. The one article I found from a cursory search simply references those social media mentions.
I’m 50/50. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was real, but I’ll assume it may not be until any even vaguely reputable sources provide any confirmation.

My belief is that they can be used to confirm a story, but the absence of it does not confirm anything because they all are under the chilling effect of the regime if not owned outright by a right wing billionaire member.
Just to be clear, what I am not saying is “believe everything without evidence” what I am instead saying, is that relying on compromised sources as your version of truth, despite that in the past typically being most reasonable, may no longer be. I mean, why are we all here on lemmy anyways right?

Taking additional examples of something that is happening at face value is not the same thing as taking complete bullshit made up stories at face value.
If those additional examples are bullshit made up stories it’s exactly the same thing. You lose credibility and it gives ammunition to the “It’s not happening” crowd when they can point to made up stories.
I don’t know if this post is true or not and I do believe ICE is doing shit like this but we should all be wary of where we’re getting our information and what we’re spreading around. Stick to verifiable sources. Not tweets designed to tug at your heartstrings.

Sure, people should be skeptical of unverified claims from social media. That is correct to a point, we also saw the actual non-violent protesting in Oregon on social media first. Lots of the reports of people being disappeared by ICE came through social media first, because reporting takes some time to do the verification. Now that it is verified that ICE does these things maybe it isn’t unrealistic to take them at face value no matter where they are coming for.
If social media posts start reporting ICE doing mass murder, sure that should be taken with a grain of salt. But disappearing people and being shitty to family members? Just another day for ICE.
