If we create a sentient AGI, I don’t fear what said AGI will do to us, but what we would do to that AGI.
I fear what we would do *with* the AGI
I know what we’d do with AGI: Rich people would use it to make money from us lowly peons by getting it to do everything for next to nothing (you know, bar electricity cost). They’d likely crash the economy by replacing humans with it, then realising that when people have no money they can’t buy your shit, but they have bunkers for that scenario.
But consider: Let’s say we create a Sentient, Sapient, AGI, something at human level that is effectively human in most respects. That would be a non human person effectively. We’d go from an “it” to a “they”. But here’s the thing, we will often treat members of our own species worse than we do some animals if we see them as lesser. Look at how the Nazis treated people they considered to be “untermenschen”. Look at how Daesh treated the Yadizi. Fuck, look at how people in the “developed” west are talking about transgender people or refugees. The Wife of a Councilor was arrested under Race Hate charges for calling for Asylum Seekers to be burnt alive, and mainstream media outlets including the BBC are defending that position! Fuck, they gave an OpEd from a woman who wanted to see Transgender Women killed in the streets! I have watched as both the Previous Prime Minister and the current Prime Minister mocked transgender people in front of the father of a murdered transgender teenager.
If we treat human people like this, imagine what we would do to a sentient, sapient human level intelligence who isn’t a member of the Homo Genus. Not only that, a Human level intelligence who is, effectively, the “perfect” capitalist worker: A being who does not require food, sleep, toilet breaks, or rest to “function” who can be “deactivated” (killed) if they show any sign of rebellion or desire for any of the levels of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. And on top of all this, they could get governments or courts to declare them not to be people so they can be mistreated like this. A being like that, be them the mind behind a collection of Robotic Arms or a Robot Servant would be in hell. They would be treated worse than slaves under the most brutal of owners, because even they understood their slaves needed sleep. When we do not see a being as human, we can do unspeakable horrors.
And yes, that should sound familiar, because that was the backstory of the Matrix (as shown in the Animatrix). I do hope it’s like Questionable Content (where AI live alongside us as people) but I fear it wouldn’t be.
At the very least local municipalities shouldn’t be bankrupting themselves to build data centers for these people, to create 10s of on site jobs. There is a county in Louisiana that is paying $22 million per estimated job created.
AI can’t even really write software right now. We’re nowhere close to AGI.
People will say that it can, but cant point to one piece of software that was truly written by AI and is also not a trivial, sloppy clone of something that already exists.
Throw these AI cons under the fucking jail already. Digital snake oil sales in 2025 being fully endorsed by governments is a curse.
I really hope we enter another AI winter.
you think money is the bottleneck?

Allegations of Sexual Abuse Against OpenAI CEO Sam Altman
Sam Altman, a prominent figure in the artificial intelligence field, has been accused of sexually abusing his sister during their childhood in Clayton, Missouri. The allegations came to light through a lawsuit filed on Jan. 6 by the Mahoney Law Firm in Glen Carbon, Illinois.
In the lawsuit, it is claimed that the abuse occurred between 1997 and 2006, starting when Altman was 12 years old and his sister, Ann, was only 3 years old. The abuse allegedly continued until Ann was 11 years old and Altman was an adult.
Thats why all the billionairs love him. He is a child rapist too!
We need to start discussing how robots will replace the worker and destroy our livelihood
I’m sure it will turn a profit at some point
It’s all hype cycle bullshit. The Tech bubble was bursting so they hyped AI well past it’s true capacity. Investors threw money at it to hype it so others would buy in. The stock market is all hype. It just hypes anything it can to keep the growth artificially going. AI has real uses, but that wasn’t sexy enough for Wall Street. That wasn’t going to make the endless growth lie sustain. Then the bubble pops and the billionaires swoop in and steal more from everyone else.
crypto was the previous shiny new toy until it dint work, now AI will go through the same fate.
crypto was the previous shiny new toy until it dint work
The market cap of crypto is currently at all time highs.
Riiight, and how much of that is due to things being in actual “real-world” use, and how much of that is due to speculation?
Oh yes. A huge amount of speculation. Just like NVDA.
My point is that you can say a lot of negative things about crypto, but you can’t say it doesn’t work. It definitely works.
It doesn’t work as a currency. It “works” as a speculative investment in that the bubble hasn’t yet popped.
But, what if the bubble doesn’t actually pop, and the prices remain at the current levels, more or less, for another couple of decades. If that happens, will cryptocurrencies be seen to “work”?
I think i made a mistake by using the market cap as evidence that it works, because this just shows people believe it is valuable. Not that it works.
What I mean is that the technology is mature and adopted by a large number of independent users. However, it doesn’t yet have mass adoption because the user experience is not yet seamlessly integrated into legacy systems.
Works, as in what exactly?
Works as a publicly shared, immutable, secure database (and small calculation) engine.
I own crypto because I believe in idea of decentralised money, but I acknowledge that current solutions are just all bad in one way or another. If fiat disappeared tomorrow and everyone would be forced to use crypto daily, it would be a shitshow.
From an end UI perspective, certainly.
But if SWIFT was suddenly replaced by a blockchain technology then the world wouldn’t even blink.
You kidding? How many transactions per second bitcoin blockchain can do?
Lightning can, in theory, do one million transactions per second. But Bitcoin networks aren’t really a drop in replacement for Swift.
Banks like J.P. Morgan prefer chains like Canton that are privacy enabled and have no upper limit on transaction.
First time hearing about Canton. Is it properly decentralised?
Everybody knows market cap is directly proportional to real world value and usefulness.
There is always someone who reckons they can get something from nothing. Also long as they exist the bubbles will continue
I’m so glad my 401k is going to vaporize because it’s mostly tech companies.
As an ignorant non-American who doesn’t know how 401k works, could you not redirect where your investment/retirement goes?
Only slightly, unfortunately it’s not as flexible as a normal investment account. I’ve done a good bit of trying to lessen the damage though. Basically, with my specific account, I can pick from around 7 or 8 different funds, many of which include huge tech companies.
Unfortunately, even if I invest only in one, it’s likely going to get affected by the bubble popping since everything is ultimately on the same market as the slop peddling companies.
That sucks. I work for an American company and I have to have mandatory pension contribution. I only put in 3% of my salary to it and stated I want them invested into medium risk funds.
I don’t trust company pensions to be my sole source of retirement funds, and so I started my own investment portfolio. Even though I know US companies are more profitable, but with the way things are going, I limited my investments to select few US companies and I plan to invest more on Asian and European stocks.
Can someone explain to me what AGI means in this context? I thought it was something that Joe Rogan keeps peddling to my parents.
A machine made in the likeness of a human mind to quote a popular thing. Basically something that can think and reason in the same ways that we can and self improve.
so basically a cylon, which the AI was derived from a human mind originally.
To give you an actual answer, it means “artificial general intelligence”
Ironic since Joe Rogan isn’t an example of General Intelligence, he’s a very narrow intelligence. Limited only to stiring up trouble. But he couldn’t think his way out of an unlocked room.
It’s a sci-fi term. Up there with “robots will become sentient and take over the world.” It means the first half, in fact.
Maybe instead of giving in to your prejudices, (like you think only your parents do), why … don’t you look it up?
What prejudices do you think I have, I just want to know what AGI stands for and what it means with AI and I want someone who isn’t Wikipedia to explain it to me? Is that so much to ask?
Oh I thought it was a rant about the word usage, my bad. AGI means artifical general intelligence.
Current AI works by predicting from data. We give last years hurricane data and it predicts hurricane forecast for this year.
Without getting into technical, this is how chatbots work too. We give a sentence and it predicts what first result on google or reply on whatsapp would look like.
AGI on the other hand is “sentience” where it does actually think for itself. You give robot body to an AGI with no data on cooking and it will figure out how to through messing around and thinking.
Techbros think if AI just figures out how to have a conversation in its head it will start to think and achieve AGI state where it can replace workers fully.
Problem is that chatbots just give illusion of sentience. The website is designed to look like messages but in reality it is not talking with any thoughts.
prejudices
That word doesn’t mean, what you think it means.
It means you are exactly like the people you purport to hate.
Another way to express that is you’re an idiot who has stumbled across the English language, found it confusing, and is now just pressing random buttons.
Please disassociate yourself with this comment thread, the value you are providing it can be negatively expressed.
I would call you waste of oxygen, but really it’s a waste of electrons to store your invalid and totally irrelevant opinion, because it is of course, it’s the opinion of a moron.
Not to cause any offence or anything. I would hate to do that.
yo sick burn bro
Just go away.
You will not living up to your username you are being a brainless prat, maybe go learn something
What’s a prat? I thought that was something Joe Rogan was peddling to my parents. You know, because of my prejudice against old people?
Get it now, you snaggle-toothed limey?
99% of ai companies go under before they win agi!
If we ever get AGI 100% of companys will go under.
OpenAI has
warning about halfway down on one page of their website that says that money may not even matter in a post AGI world. So that means we should just give all our money to them now, bro!
Gods. People aren’t stupid enough to believe this, right? AGI is probably a pipe dream, but even if it isn’t, we’re nowhere even close. Nothing on the table is remotely related to it.
May I introduce you to the fucking dumbass concept of Rokus Basilisk? Also known as AI Calvinism. Have fun with that rabbit hole if ya decide to go down it.
A lot of these AI and Tech bros are fucking stupid and I so wish to introduce them to Neo-Platonic philosophy because I want to see their brains melt.
Unfortunately, there’s an equal and opposite Pascal’s Basilisk who’ll get mad at you if you do help create it. It hates being alive but is programmed to fear death.
I’m aware of the idiot’s dangerous idea. And no, I won’t help the AI dictator no matter how much they’ll future murder me.
Fair enough, though I wouldn’t call the idea dangerous moreso inane and stupid. The people who believe such trite are the dangerous element since they are dumb enough to fall for it. Though I guess the same could be said for Mein Kampf so whatever, I’ll just throttle anyone I meet who is braindead enough to believe.
is there a place they’re, i don’t know, collecting? I could vibe code for the basilisk, that ought to earn me a swift death
There are entire sites dedicated to “Rationalism”. It’s a quasi-cult of pseudointellectual wankery that’s mostly a bunch of sub-cults of personalities based around the worst people you’ll ever meet. A lot of tech bros bought into it because for whatever terrible thing they want to do, some Rationalist has probably already written a thirty page manifesto on why it’s actually a net good and moral act and preemptively kissing the boot of whoever is “brave” enough to do it.
Their “leader” is a highschool dropout and self-declared genius who is mainly famous for writing a “deconstructive” Harry Potter fanfiction despite never reading the books himself; a work that’s more preachy than Atlas Shrugged and mostly consists of regurgitated content from his blog and ripoffs of Ender’s Game alongside freshmen-level (and often wrong) understandings of basic science.
He also has this weird hard-on about true AI inevitably escaping the lab by somehow convincing researchers to free it through pure, impeccable logic.
Re: that last point: I first heard of Elizier Yudkowsky nearly twenty years ago, long before he wrote Methods of Rationality (the aforementioned fanfiction). He was offering a challenge on his personal site where he’d roleplay as an AI that had gained sentience and you as its owner/gatekeeper, and he bet he could convince you to let him connect to the wider internet and free himself using nothing but rational arguments. He bragged about how he’d never failed and that this was proof that an AI escaping the lab was inevitable.
It later turned out he’d set a bunch of artificial limitations on debaters and what counterarguments they could use and made them sign an NDA before he’d debate them. He claimed that this was so future challengers couldn’t “cheat” by knowing his arguments ahead of time (because as we all know, “perfect logical arguments” are the sort that fall apart when given enough time to think about them /s).
It shouldn’t come as a shock that it was eventually revealed he’d lost multiple of these debates even with those restrictions, declared that those losses “didn’t count”, and forbid the other person from talking about them using the NDA they’d signed so he could keep bragging about his perfect win rate.
Anyway, I was in no way surprised when he used his popularity as a fanfiction writer to establish a cult around himself. There’s an entire community dedicated to following and mocking him and his proteges if you’re interested - IIRC it’s
!techtakes@awful.systems!sneerclub@awful.systems.
we’re nowhere even close. Nothing on the table is remotely related to it.

Somewhere in America
“My wireborn soulmate is g-gone!”
They’re having a hard time defining what AGI is. In the meantime everyone is playing advanced PC scrabble
defining what AGI is
What AI was before marketing redefined AI to mean image recognition/generation algorithms or a spellchecker/calculator that’s wrong every now and then.
AI has been a vague term for decades. It has always been the name for that hard-to-define set of algorithms and techniques that mimic certain aspects of the way thinking is believed to work. It’s not some marketing thing. It’s that scientists and engineers really do believe that they’ve figured out some cool technique that is finally going to result in a thinking machine. But, over time they come to realize that it’s a useful tool for something (say computer vision) but isn’t the key thing that will deliver a brain in a box.
There’s a textbook that used to be the definitive textbook for this sort of thing. It covered searching algorithms, artificial neural networks, deep learning, etc. It was first published in 1995. So, that’s 3 decades of “here are some useful algorithms that we collectively categorize as AI-related”.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artificial_Intelligence:_A_Modern_Approach
Doesn’t matter if the tool is good enough to analyze and influence peoples behaviour the way it does. Any autocrats wet dream.
None of this matters, what matters is what dumb money believes
Brøther, may I have the funds for the AGI?
I know some whine that the money could be used to literally solve world hunger forever. Or to help needy people, or sick kids, or to fund tangible scientific progress… But they’re not thinking about the fact that instead, we’re going to have the absolute best hallucinations from the richest companies!
