Yes, I do still browse reddit, mainly for hockey and some niche subs that aren’t here yet. Once in a while I dip my toes into r/all to see the garbage that floats to the top and this one popped up today.

r/conspiracy has always been a shithole, but when I first saw this post I thought it was on a meme sub, but no, those morons actually believe this shit. Truly blows my mind how amazingly stupid a lot of people are.

If you feel like having some of your brain cells commit suicide you can read the comments here - https://www.reddit.com/r/conspiracy/comments/1m6p3p6/octopuses_lived_before_dinosaurs_and_were/

If there’s a better way to share a reddit post without giving them clicks let me know and I’ll edit my link. I know I’ve seen it before but I don’t remember what it was.

The fact that there are very few fossils of soft bodied creatures kinda misses the point.

All the evolutionary diversity of molluscs is still alive. Squids, nautiluses, cuttlefish, snails slugs.

What’s the hypothesis here? An alien meteorite landed with 800 types of cephalopod, that just by chance share 97% of their DNA with slugs and snails that already existed on Earth?

At least these are fun and amusing conspiracies that don’t hurt anyone.

Back in the day it was a bunch of trumpers butthurt that they had to wear a mask.

Unfortunately if you have a tendency to buy into one fact-denying conspiracy, then you have a tendency to buy into all of them. That is why these kinds of conspiracy theories are always a pipeline into fascism.

Remember now we also have… Trumpers that don’t care if Trump hypothetically rapes their own child because he’d hypothetically be doing it for hypothetical good reasons… and also that Democrats control the weather

People forget. Back in the day it was talk about Libor and NSA abusing FISA and UFO coverups, much of which was actual conspiracy not theory. It wasn’t clearly aligned politically, just suspicious of power. The trumplings didn’t show up for quite a few years and quickly shit all over the floor.

        Lol, lmao even

If you think the conspiracies weren’t politically motivated, you didn’t dig into who was “controlling the Libor/NSA” deep enough. Especially with anything money based, it always came back to the Jews. Like, for decades of looking into this shit, it’s always been at the back of these conspiracy theories. Also, they had to hide their power level so much more up until rather recently, so it was easier for the naive to not see what they were really doing.

Oh yeah, those shitgibbons are always lurking around the margins looking for an opportunity. It’s an eternal problem, and another actual fascist conspiracy is driving it right now. Fuck Stephen Harper and the IDU.

Most discussions about Libor in the early slashdot/digg/reddit fora were not ethnically aligned, the craven ones got downvotes at first. I never read any upvoted threads about NSA abuses that referenced hate speech. No one notably mentioned Jews or other hate targets regarding UFO coverups until space laser MTG. I also think those posts and threads were downvoted and moderated at first.

A lot of the r/conspiracy discussion in the early 2010’s still had quite a few left-leaning anti authoritarian participants, buoyed by recently being right about some large actual conspiracies, and they were numerous enough to repress obvious racism. It didn’t become a lost battle until the Q brigade showed up.

No clear evolutionary path in the fossil record.

…for the creatures that have no bones and only a beak that could even fossilize? Color me SHOCKED their ancestors didn’t leave fossils.

You… are looking at a fossil of one. That’s what the post is about. I mean, maybe they fossilize less frequent than other animals, but it seems like they do.

Yup. It’s not that soft tissue DOESN’T fossilize, it’s just that the conditions to do so are much rarer, and soft tissue is obviously much more susceptible to degradation before fossilization.

The sentiment is still correct though, even bone fossils are exceedingly rare. I can’t remember the exact estimate but of all the people alive in the US, archeologists 1 million years from now would be lucky to find 60 human bones. I’m not sure if that included teeth however.

There’s redlib and its instances, but as with YouTube links and piped/invidious, I prefer the original link and think it should always be present. https://github.com/redlib-org/redlib

Lazy people can just replace www. with safe on their own and they’re good, so https://safereddit.com/r/....

I don’t think they realize that aquatic based life on earth had several hundred extra million years to evolve before even the most basic bitch fish-frogs crawled out of the primordial pond of orgy water that ended up spawning us

Resident alien has a funny gag related to this where the alien saw an octopus in a restaurant and the octopus said we’ve been waiting for you!

And was voiced by Nathan Fillion. Was a great cameo…plus we get Jewel Staite in this season. Just need Adam Baldwin, Gina Torres, Summer Glau, Morerna Baccarin, Ron Glass and Sean Maher and we got the crew of serenity back.

The wiki article has more info, but it’s basically one fossil, originally classified as octopus, but that is now retracted and its connection to anything is not known yet.

Oh no, so that falls right into the Reddit trap of, well then it must be alien.

Without reading the title I looked at the image and thought someone was cooking octopus and really really burnt it.
