WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump said Monday he’s placing the Washington, D.C., police department under federal control and deploying the National Guard to make the nation’s capital safer.

Trump has promised new steps to tackle homelessness and crime in Washington, prompting the city’s mayor to voice concerns about the potential use of the National Guard to patrol the streets.

Ahead of a news conference, Trump said Monday on social media that the nation’s capital would be “LIBERATED today!” He said he would end the “days of ruthlessly killing, or hurting, innocent people.”

Violent crime in Washington D.C. is actually at a 30 year low.

Washington DC is sliding further into fascism all because a kid named “Big Balls”, who was put in a leadership position of dismantling the federal government, got beat up by a bunch of 15 year olds. this is truly the dumbest timeline.

further? newsflash, it’s already there as is the rest of the country. how can you slide further into something when you’re already up to your chin in fascist shit?

This is the EXACT problem with Americans. It’s always “it’s happening” or “soon” or “we’re heading there” when the boat is already underwater.

What more is it going to take for US Citizens to finally accept that they’re a fascist nation? what more does the Nazi in charge have to do for Americans to start rioting and resisting?

Of course we’re already deep into the well of fascism. My comment wasn’t meant to trivialize that - I thought it was obvious. It was only meant to highlight that things continue to get even worse.

Judging by my own little corner of the country, the normal operating state of conservative white americans is to be paranoid and complain about how the world is conspiring against them. Nothing ever happens of course, but they don’t realize that because there is ALWAYS something they could complain about.

He can only do this for 30 days, then congress has to pass a law extending it. Wonder if Congress bends the knee? I have no doubts they will, and it’ll be another example of their cowardice.

DC has seen record lows in crime. This is all Trump going crazy.

I continue to be baffled that people assume that the orangeboi regime “has” to do anything.

They don’t, and nobody who has the barest shred of power to do fucking anything about it is actually doing anything to stop it. They are, and will continue to, categorically ignore laws, court orders, precedent, convention, and so on. They demonstrably do not give a shit.

Stop fucking pretending that this is a normal situation and a normal government. It’s not. The last 4 years were our Weimar Republic era. This 4 (+ ???) year span will be when they do the Enabling Act, citizenship/blood and honor laws, the Treachery Act (honestly wouldn’t even be surprised if they used the same fucking name for it), the Malicious Practices Act, and so on. There is a playbook, and they’re following it.

You’re putting an awful lot of faith in the fact that literally anyone will stop him from doing this longer than 30 days. Congress has to pass a law to extend it? Says who? The law? I don’t reckon Trump cares much about a silly little thing like the law.

Remember when a bunch of dumb assholes didn’t think fascism could happen in America?

Remember when a bunch of dumb assholes allowed themselves to trip and fall into the “single issue” hole and let fascism take hold in America over a conflict happening on the other side of the planet?

“A conflict happening on the other side of the planet” is one my new favorite euphemisms for genocide - one that has left 50k children killed or injured.

What I remember was the Democratic establishment being presented with a simple choice between halting fascism and doing genocide, and they went balls deep in genocide. In reality, halting fascism via the Democrats was never in the cards.

Herp derp, allow me to usher in actual fascism in my own country by a felon rapist pedophile and his enablers so I can clutch my pearls about holding Democrats accountable for “committing genocide” that another country is actually committing.

I mean, how fucking stupid does one have to be to abstain from voting or shit on their vote and flush it down the toilet with a 3rd party when Donald Trump and his enablers literally advertised that they were going to usher in fascism, and are now doing so? I can hold the Democrats accountable for mishandling a foreign affairs issue AFTER I deal with the true threat to our nation.

WAY after the fucks I give about America. Apparently you don’t feel the same.

            Right there. Pure stubborn ignorance.

Correct, I don’t feel the same way.

America is rotting from the inside. You live in what’s essentially a third world country wrapped in a Gucci belt. Infrastructure is collapsing. Wage-slavery is the norm. Healthcare is a luxury item. Education isn’t about learning, it’s about producing compliant office drones. Your schools aren’t safe from mass shootings. You have enough empty homes to house every homeless person twice over, but they’re kept locked away to protect investor profits.

Hate crimes are an everyday occurrence. Mass shootings barely make the news unless the body count is high enough. Corruption? Open and shameless. Insider trading? Done in daylight by your own lawmakers. You’re in the richest country in the world, yet your taxes bankroll genocides, war crimes, and free healthcare and education, for Israelis, not for your own people. Immigrant kids are caged like animals. Prison slavery is thriving, because locking people up is profitable.

And all of this? This was before Trump.

Trump didn’t bring fascism to America, he just slammed the accelerator. The rot was already there. And instead of demanding a candidate who wasn’t a fascist, you’ve convinced yourself that the Democrats’ brand of fascism is somehow “better.” You call it pragmatism, but it’s nationalism, prioritizing your own at the expense of everyone else. It’s fascism in softer colors. It’s in the brainwashing, embedded so deep that when someone calls it out, you react emotionally instead of thinking critically.

What if somebody agrees, and they acted accordingly in words and deeds, but then their opinions and actions were overruled by a combination of party leadership and millions of other voters?

Now it’s election day 2024, all debate and candidate selection is in the past, and the choices before this somebody are Same Old Shit (D), Turbo Fascism ®, or Other (send your message but don’t affect the outcome).

I think we should consider all lives equal value, naturally. That means we cannot ignore the tens of thousands of bodies in Gaza. It also means we cannot ignore the hundreds of thousands of excess covid deaths Trump already caused, or the lives and communities currently being destroyed because they are too LGBT-Mexican.

So our somebody is still standing in that voting booth.

Please tell me which is the moral vote and why.

This isn’t farming for a gotcha. This is the thought process I personally went through, and I enjoy having my mind changed. But having been active on Lemmy for a couple years now, I feel like I mostly understand but just disagree.

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—Because I was not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

                https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_They_Came

I think the moral choice is quite obvious, history is literally repeating itself, and we should have learned this lesson. If you let the Democrats genocide Palestinians, who will you let them genocide next? Are you certain you’ll stop when they start domestic genocides?

The only moral choice is to stand up to Nazis, even the nice ones.

People keep thinking the US is a magic wand that can just go into other countries and change them. The US has had long-standing contractual obligations for military intelligence, to hold political stalemates to halt WWIII, and other geopolitical structures with Israel and surrounding nations. Waving the magic wand would cause instability elsewhere on the planet, which would lead to more death, possible nuclear weapon deployments, and the end of humanity.

Genocide is always bad, and should have been stopped by any and/or all world powers, (remember, there are other nations around the globe) but it is not a single monochrome US issue that people seem to think it is.

You can’t help others until you can help yourself. The US can’t help itself now partly due to to monochrome voters not voting to save their own nation, partly because the Democrat party abandoned blue-collar workers and Mango Mussolini said the right words so they’d believe he’d help them. These same people will bitch about CIA involvement in Central- and South-American countries and the chaos it caused (rightly so) and how we shouldn’t interfere with other governments, completely missing the hypocrisy that it’s just cherry-picking manipulation of other nations.

No idea how so many people just blindly believe, “well that’s bad, so it’s our job fix it, even if it means destroying our own nation,” at a global scale. Life doesn’t work that way, even with the best of intentions.

You’re trying to explain international relations to people who have absolutely no grasp on international relations, don’t care, and even if they did, would still choose their perceived moral superiority over international relations.

Their brains can conceive “genocide bad” but any other nuance is lost on them.

        Blah blah blah.

        1. Surprise surprise. International relations are complicated. It’s awkward when an old ally and your most important ally in the Middle East, who you are deeply involved with in a plethora of ways, ramps up their everlasting war with a neighbor. You don’t want to lose them, so you do things like float arms shipment cancellations and try to help broker a peace deal, which is exactly what Biden did.

        2. That’s on the other fucking side of the planet bud. You may want to focus on the health of our democracy right here at home before worrying about people killing each other on the other side of the planet because that’s ALWAYS going to be happening and weird how you don’t talk about all the other places it’s CURRENTLY happening.

        3. Oops, we let a fascist party who gives exactly ZERO fucks about Palestine take control of our nation. I’m sure that’ll help Palestinians.

Let me make this abundantly clear. I care WAY MORE about OUR democracy HERE in OUR country than I do about two other nations on the other side of the planet continuing some dumbshit religious conflict.

“Conflict”, “everlasting war”, “dumbshit religious conflict”…

Bruh… just say genocide if you aren’t a genocide denier. You dont deny there is a genocide in Palestine, do you? No? Then stop the disingenuous casting of it as a normal, symmetrical war.

Leftists who refused to vote for Kamala did not do so because of “conflict”. Leftists who chose not to vote for Kamala did so because of genocide. Stop whitewashing. Engage honestly with the actual leftist position instead of your strawman.
