Musk and Detroit convinced people that EVs should be expensive. The reality is the profit margins on EVs are huge. Battery costs dropped 90% in the last decade, there is no reason why EVs should cost more than ICE.

I think at the time, they had to prove to the world that EVs weren’t a cheaper alternative but a luxurious upgrade. Now that they’ve established prestige, the prices should drop, well if governments do their jobs properly.

Great! At last a small and (kind of) affordable electric car! Tired of those massive SUVs. Maybe in, like, ten years 🤞🏻…

Bit of a tangent but, why all new cars are so ugly? Subjective, I know, but they all look so angry and aggressive, full of ridges and crests… where are the cute, happy cars?

That’s more like it! Look how happy it looks! But even that one is bigger than the old twingos, have you seen the new r5? It’s a suv! Yes, compact suv, or urban suv or whatever, still huge for an r5.

I have a 2001 206, the 208 would be the current version of the model and it’s a foot longer, and looks super aggressive, specially compared with the absolute beauty that is the 206.

Edit: French people laugh more like ‘hon hon hon’ (the n is not actually pronounced, but turns the o into a nasal vowel)

I quite like the styling of this, more than many far more expensive cars. Generally I prefer angular, geometric asthetics to the bubbly blob car styles we went through about 10-15 years ago. 80s fastbacks were peak vehicle design for me.

Yeah, those old delta, golf, 205… looked quite pretty. But it’s not the same, these new cars are unnecessary pointy and sharp everywhere, like that edge they put in the middle of the back of every other model.

23,990 AUD - approximately 13,500 EUR or 15,600 USD. I don’t know much about the pricing of cars in Austrialia, but it sounds pretty cheap.

The cheapest fossil fuel cars in Australia are AU$18,000 new, so $24,000 for an EV is very cheap. Until recently the cheapest EVs in Australia were about $40,000.

For comparison, the cheapest base model Toyota Corolla is around AU$31,000 and the Tesla Model 3 starts at AU$54,900.

Comparing BYD with TEMU doesn’t seem like a fair comparison. As far as I know, they score pretty decent in independent tests.

I wonder if I could import one from Mexico to the US. Australia and Europe are too far away to do it cheaply, but theoretically, couldn’t I just drive it into Texas with the proper paperwork?

Of I remember right from the super beatle days, there was a large tax they put in place to prevent this.

That was twenty some of years ago though, so no promises.

Yeah. Importing a 25 year old car requires 0 effort, 1% price at border - before fucko took office. I have owned a few Japanese imports I brought in. But newer than 25 years old, you require paperwork showing safety, emissions, etc., plus big taxes.

Good news is you can finally get a 2001 Super Beetle Ultimate Edition from Mexico next year. 😀🇲🇽 (they’re called Vochos down there. My girlfriend and I call them V8s… V+“ocho”)

I wonder if MG will reduce their prices.

For the Americans - this is around US$15,600 including sales tax but excluding fees (dealer fee, registration, etc)
