Back in liberal areas you still see conservative state and local administrators treating LGBTQ as pariahs and punishing them for any kind of outspoken queerness. You’re allowed to be gay in the US only as long as you are indistinguishable from all your straight peers. If you look gay - even in bleeding heart of NYC or the Hollywood Hills - you’re going to take shit from the police, the mayor, and most major employers.
American liberalism is entirely a legal fiction. In the free market, it might as well not exist.
