Trying to sort computer shit out quick and dirty just to get unstuck.

    spoiler

Windows 11 machine is completely full so using a Mac to download the classic Linux Mint and waiting a hundred years for the iso to download so I can sha the damn thing and make a bootable usb drive. The old desktop has been backed up a few weeks ago.

Tried to drag a bunch of files onto a 32gb usb off Windows machine to free space and keep them safe but there’s seriously not enough room for all of it so I might get an external drive just for that to have on top of backups. Otherwise if I can get the desktop sorted soon I can just ferry the most important stuff over.

Then I have to download everything off Flickr and Dropbox and make sure the last gmails get changed over on any platforms they’re still connected to (or emails they’re recoveries for).

Today is going to be very busy so that may have to wait

Yay the string of numbers matches one of the approved ones :)

Apparently I’m ok to skip the authentication of the .txt file so I’m using balenaEtcher to flash the iso and hopefully all goes well.

Yay. Welcome (back?) to the Tux team! I realised how many old photos I still have stored on Facebook the other day. I think un-cloud-ifying is going to be one of my long term projects too. So I look forward to hearing how you go.

I’m going to have to do it fast because starting from December I’m going to lose access :(

I’ve tried Linux before but not as my main. This is basically to test out and see if I can switch over for most things because I viscerally hate Windows 11

I’ve been on linux for years. LibreOffice is prettty good as an MS office replacement. I don’t play a lot of PC games so I’ve never missed that. I reckon you’ll be fine.

Problems might include document compatibility when dealing with organisations and possibly WebEx or Zoom. I’ll work it all out on this old machine as I get time and energy though. I have a lot of more urgent stuff to do before then. One step at a time

Yell out if you find any issues. I use Ubuntu as my biz laptop. Zoom and IIRC Webex are ok and I have had to work around document compatibility a bit so I know some tricks :)

Thanks. They’re actually extremely patchy because I’m mostly self taught, I can follow curly tutorials and use the command line with a guide but a lot of the fundamentals have been missed
