Jesus Christ this whole thing is such an undemocratic farce. When the bill was presented before Parliament, we (as well as *the Members of Parliament who voted to pass this) were specifically told that it would not apply to YouTube.

So they’ve rushed it through Parliament without giving the public time to provide proper feedback or even giving themselves time to properly consider the feedback that was given. They passed it without having any clear idea of how it would work in practice, and by the sounds of it so far that’s basically because it won’t work. And now we find out that the Government pushed the Parliament to pass it by lying about its scope.

Every single thing about this is completely fucked.

I think YT Kids is shit as a babysitter for little kids particularly when we have the ABC. But my kids are older and have individual accounts with age based limits and it is working really well along with parental guidance ofcourse.

I do not give a fuck about foreign multinationals in general, particularly not tech ones, and I’ll back a democratically elected Aussie government and our sovereignty against them on principle. But Youtube’s account system is working out well for our family and I don’t want to lose it otherwise I am going to have to spend effort on circumvention which is just a waste of everyone’s time.

Afaik I cannot access existing age restricted videos on YouTube using Newpipe so it’s possible my YouTube viewing will disappear altogether because that’s the only app I use.

I can’t imagine switching to mobile firefox with ublock origin will be smoother.

YouTube has an 18+ category that requires you be signed in with an age-verified account, but that’s separate from the “YouTube Kids” system, which restricts a bunch of functionality on videos marked as “for kids” by making you unable to use playlists, leave comments, or view in the mini-player while browsing elsewhere.

In addition to that, YouTube is hands down THE worst one for small children nowadays with all the algorithm harvesting soft-porn videos allowed on YT Kids.

Everything is on YouTube. That’s their business model. And that’s the risk. If your kid has unfettered access to youtube, their algorithm will find the thing that keeps their interest and then shovel it into every feed until they fear turning it off.

Sure, or they could link into some AI generated animations of sensory fetishes. YouTube has everything their little hearts could desire, and it’s goal is to keep them engaged. Even the educational content is competing with “educational” content that’s been optimized for maximum engagement with minimum investment. Anything created for kids is only one or two links away from some toy unboxing or pay-to-win video game.

Honestly Idk how this is gonna work in practice but so long as it’s non invasive I’m pretty cool with the idea on paper. Mainly because teenagers online are just God damn annoying lol. If I have to start doing things like registering devices or providing documentation I’ll definitely be against it but not even for privacy reasons that shit just sounds tedious as fuck to do and I’m lazy. If getting rid of the kids is more annoying than them being here I’m against it. That’s my selfish smooth brain take hahaha

I just want existing accounts grandfathered in. These kinds of bans are more effective at reducing uptake than getting people off the platforms, and more importantly I don’t want to do more paperwork.

I can’t find my source for the fact that existing accounts won’t be grandfathered in.
