That’s definitely what it is, but the gari served with sushi is usually pale yellow in color, so that might be the cause for their confusion.
I’ve seen both pink or yellow. No clue what the difference is.
I may be wrong, but my understanding is that there is no difference, and that the pink ones are pink because of food coloring. It makes the ginger look younger or something.
