It’s not ‘livable’ in terms of building code. We could allow spaces like this to be used as bedrooms, but that would require doing away with the laws that say you need fire egress in bedrooms.
you cannot seriously be proposing that we relax fire code for rentals.
Sorry to butt-in on this exchange, but I did not see anywhere they proposed such a thing?
I’ve been homeless and I’ve gotta say, fire codes are worth the toilet paper they’re printed on when it’s getting cold out, and you’ve been through 6 days of constant rain.
Fucking yeah man, any set of walls with semi decent insulation and semi decent roof waaaaaay beats trying to sleep in your only set of clothes or a sleeping bag or a tent… during a fucking heatwave or blizzard or downpour or windstorm or w/e.
Full time camping outside like that is… usually something most people can only conceive of as what EXTREME survivalists who DRINK THEIR OWN PISS … on TV… do.
Uh, nope, no thats just 24/7/365 life when you’re homeless.
Well, minus the piss drinking part, that’s not a good idea lol.
Like I legit have diagnosed PTSD from the experience, as well as, you know, aforementioned crippling injuries.
Thankfully I’ve been housed for a while now and have been working on handling both of those, and have been making good progress on both… but oh holy shit the number of days and nights I nearly died from one thing or another…phew, yeah.
Lots of people I met along the way… they did die, I was almost always the only nearby person with any halfway decent first aid/trauma response/OD response knowledge, did my best to help what I could… often wasn’t enough.
The empathy here is not forgetting that people died for those laws. I understand that people would rather risk death than be homeless, but going back to tenement halls is not the answer.
I see, you want things to be even worse for the poor so they can have a revolution faster.
If we allow spaces like OP’s article to be the new bare minimum for rentable space, then that’s what corps will rent at apartment prices. It won’t bring the cost of housing down, it’ll just be another way to funnel money from the poor into the pockets of the rich, and people will die in the process. If you support that, you’re licking boots.
Are you stupid? For profit will make it worse for the poor dumbass. Its why capitalism is only short term oriented and why its forced to compromise on socialist practices. What do you think happens to everyones bank account living in a funnel system for 0.01% of the population? They are forced to work for the rest of there lives.
I’m so stupid I don’t understand how to more clearly state that no money should be required in exchange for permission to live here. It should not be a rental property. No profits should be made.
Didn’t say I was, but clearly mass homelessness constitutes an emergency, and emergencies tend to legitimate, you know, emergency measures of some kind.
Both from the perspective of the squatter and society more broadly.
Without attempting to single handedly devise a comprehensive set of policy reforms to solve homelessness…
Only gonna get worse if nobody does anything that actually works to alleviate the problem.
…
Also, what specifically do you mean by fire egress for a bedroom?
I live in a studio apartment.
I am currently crippled.
In the event of a fire, my exit options are hobbling out of the single door with crutches or a cane, then slowly moving down some stairs… or falling a couple stories out of a window.
Yeah, no elevator here. Not ADA compliant. Can’t afford much on disability alone.
Seems like this guy could probably shimmy out of that crawl space faster than I could hobble down some stairs, and I know cuz some dipshit tripped the alarm at 2 am a few months back and it took me 15 minutes to suit up in braces and then actually get outside the building.
Reason my building isn’t ADA compliant is because its an old motel, thats been hastily converted into doing just normal long term rentals… as a kind of emergency measure, toward housing those down on their luck, when housing prices are insane.
Would I prefer to live in an ADA compliant dwelling?
Sure, but I even more strongly prefer to not be homeless because nobody allowed this hasty motel -> apartment conversion to happen, because of fire codes, and I can’t afford anywhere that is fully up to code.
Oh I’m sorry you interpreted what I said as ‘attacking every level of this’, seems like this issue is a bit of a touchy subject for you?
Its ok, as a formerly homeless person, I am quite used to my perspective offending people by reminding them of their privelege and them being very insecure about that.
Also, lol at the outright command you have given me.
Nah, I’ll say whatever the fuck I want, cry to mods or block me if you don’t like that.

I know.
I also know what I said.
Its more livable than being homeless.
Now this person has a $75k bail, and a or more of a criminal record, so the cycle will continue.
I agree the record and bail are bullshit, but you cannot seriously be proposing that we relax fire code for rentals.

I think the empathy here is when you become this desperate the laws become a suggestion.
The empathy here is not forgetting that people died for those laws. I understand that people would rather risk death than be homeless, but going back to tenement halls is not the answer.
When capitalism gives nobody choices you dont get to decide the laws the people do. Revolutions have started for less.
I see, you want things to be even worse for the poor so they can have a revolution faster.

Complain about the right parts, instead of attacking every level of this
