Yesterday I found out I’d made a mistake with the ato about 3 years ago that will most likely result in a very significant debt.
It was my fuck up, and I accept that.
I’m the one who approached them first, when I realised something was wrong which will work in my favour in a big way.
But still I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t really, really worried about the outcome.
So far they’ve been pretty good and have asked for more info. The tone of the call with the debt team was surprisingly light and the guy I spoke to said “everyone makes mistakes”.
But yeah, I have enough shit to deal with right now and this on top is a lot.
all G my friend. Hubs ADHD meant he didn’t file his return for five years and the spankering, while impressive, was something they worked with him to develop a payment plan for.

Thanks for listening.
The ATO will happily work with someone to pay a debt off! They only take legal action if the entity in debt is being obtuse and evading.
You did the right thing, it will work in your favour, and you will have the option of a payment plan!
the only way to handle this is confronting it head on and getting good legal advice
You can stretch it out over about 24 months so at least it won’t be a big hit all at once
