Until recently I worked for a big telecoms company as a software engineer. We had time set aside for self development and non-work projects. Originally it was half a day a week, but we found it better to be a day every fortnight.

You could learn a new programming language or tool, build something just for fun or something you thought was useful for the team (we built a custom dashboard with notices etc., a quiz engine for weekly quizzes), or add functionality to a project that wasn’t specced or requested, but you thought could add value.

After a while, a department wide code wars league was set up to challenge and learn, we had a yearly Easter egg hunt that involved solving puzzles to find prizes, people did lightning talks to teach things that they’d learnt, workshops, etc.

So much knowledge, skill and confidence was added to the team that was worth way more than what we’d do on any normal day. I’d recommend it to any technical team to try something similar.

I think a capsule, permanently drifting through space, frozen, with a plaque on the side saying “this is a warning to everyone” sends a much clearer message.

Dvds still account for around half of physical media sales. Far from obsolete.

Mastadon has definitely improved it’s user onboarding process. When I first tried, and failed, to use it 3 years ago it was awful. Signing up a year ago was a painless process. It may not be fully ready for the mainstream just yet, but it’s definitely getting there.

Soul Reaver seriously needs a reboot. Soul Reaver kept getting mentioned a while back when Square Enix sold off Cristal Dynamics to pay for NFT scams, but no mutterings of a reboot/remake.

As a software engineer, I’m still trying to figure out their build pipeline. That thing has got to be interesting.

While I don’t disagree with what you said in theory, what’s stopping you from having these conversations? Is there a fear of losing your friends if you talk about these issues? What about your job, house, family, or even your life? These are real fears for a lot of queer people, still to this day, even in places like the UK and USA.

There’s plenty of media out there that discusses non nuclear relationships for straight people. It’s not always mainstream, but it exists. There’s still very little for queer people that doesn’t have to also tell the story of the bigotry and fear we face on the regular.

Please have your discussions, but rather than not having anything against us, have our backs when our rights and our lives are in jeopardy.
