Not The Onion@lemmy.world•From cask to car, could red wine be Australia's next fuel?English
11·9 days agoIt makes about as much sense as growing a bunch of corn with heavy fertilization just to ferment it to ethanol. Which is to say, not at all.
The only thing I bought after being advertised on a podcast was a Cleverhood jacket/poncho thing, and I have zero regrets, it’s a great rain jacket. But I had seen other people use them so it wasn’t a complete ad-based purchase.
Ecosia and Qwant are trying to change that, but it’s an uphill fight.

Technology@lemmy.world•Tesla is recalling its cheaper Cybertruck because the wheels might fall off / All 173 of the RWD Cybertrucks sold by Tesla are being recalled.English
71·24 days agoConsidering that every Cybertruck ever produced has been recalled, it’s fair to point out that it has been a short, troubled history for this platform.
Also, 173 units is a devastating indictment, probably the wildest part of the article.

21·27 days agoIf the reporting is accurate, your data is still sent to Google’s servers for processing. This doesn’t appear to improve privacy, it’s more like an extension of the user surveillance business model that Google has pursued in the past decade.

1·1 month agoI was in a small town in Maine that did that informally, there were a handful of shops and a ban at one store was applied everywhere. They all had signs warning about the policy. It was apparently very effective.

News@lemmy.world•Spirit Airlines prepares to cease operations amid financial struggles and high oil prices
2·1 month agoI had some okay experiences with Spirit, but they “rescheduled” a flight one time by 13 hours that was essentially a cancelation, and I swore never to use them again for any trip that mattered. Between “ceasing operations” and a taxpayer-funded half-billion dollar bail-out, I choose ceasing operations.

News@lemmy.world•The Feds Keep Prosecuting Protesters Against ICE — and Losing
10·5 months agoYou’re almost certainly right, they will be fired if they disobey the would-be autocrat. That’s basically what happened in Nixon’s “Saturday Night Massacre” when he wanted to fire special prosecutor Archibald Cox. Attorney General Elliot Richadson refused and resigned immediately. So too did Deputy AG William Ruckelshaus. Then loyal fascism supporter Robert Bork did as instructed, and the story of the resignations became bigger than the firing of Cox, leading to the impeachment proceedings and a new special prosecutor.
I don’t really disagree with you, the system needs significant reform, and losing good career professionals is bad for everyone. But it’s worth it to fight like hell at every stage, it slows them down and sometimes the opposition shifts public sentiment.

News@lemmy.world•The Feds Keep Prosecuting Protesters Against ICE — and Losing
80·5 months agoThese defeats in court are good—necessary, even—but the protestors are still being prosecuted, put in jail, subjected to cash bond requirements and required to hire defense counsel. Yes, the Trump Admin loses a lot, but it doesn’t have to win every case to chill and deter opposition. The power imbalance is still a huge threat when a would-be autocrat can bring the full force of the federal government to bear on individual citizens. I want to see more AUSAs declining to prosecute at all, they have independent obligations as officers of the court to follow the constitution.

24·1 year ago… . and Tesla stock is somehow STILL over-valued.

I assume they are all running for the public exit because they are losing money faster than they can raise it and don’t have any reliable business models to which they can transition in the near term. If they can’t become profitable, the next best thing is to go public while the hype is hot and to cash out ASAP.
