A few Firefox tabs may crash occasionally as a side effect. And obviously a Firefox eats up all of the 8GB it’s allocated it may crash itself though usually it doesn’t and tabs will crash before the browser crashes.

That’s good to know, I don’t know how well it would work though I feel like I enabled something about closing background tabs to reduce memory load (it might have been what you said, it might have been something else I don’t really remember) and it helped a little bit but it still ended up chewing up a lot of memory.

Setting the limit though did help immediately. And stop the overconsumption problems, occasionally a couple of tabs crash here and there but it doesn’t freeze or worse cause other apps to slow down and freeze. Which did happen before.

I can confirm this, the first time I tried it out I accidentally set it to 1 GB, Firefox could only see that amount of memory. Though limiting Firefox to only 1GB its a very bad idea and it can cause it to crash it’s not because it’s trying to go over though it’s just because it ran out of memory.

8GB is what I would consider the safe minimum for web browsing. If you said it lower you’ll have performance losses. Setting it higher though will only chew up valuable System RAM by inactive tabs.

It might be harder for them but there are similar tools that they could use to limit it. One I’ve seen people use is firejail, a tool designed for sandboxing processes and applications.

I’ve personally never tried it myself though so I can’t attest to how well it works, either for this purpose or sandboxing in general.

Also browsers can chew that up fast if you have a lot of tabs, Firefox has managed to do it a few times. At least until I started limiting its RAM to 8GB (best decision ever)

(To use it with other apps like Chrome or Electron apps just replace the command at the end, and startup class with the ones from the program you’d like to run. Icon and Name changes are optional but might be desirable so you remember what app it is for).

I would encourage that, but if your instance doesn’t defederate them you may have to go a bit farther since you’ll still get replies from lemmy.ml users, as users are not blocked as part of this functionality. And that is by design, it’s not meant to act as a replacement or alternative to defederation, it’s meant to act as an alternative to blocking all communities on an instance.

Well right wingers want to ban books and services like IA make that harder since they provide easy access to download or digitally borrow those books. It makes it harder for them to deny people access to those books since they can find them online. Of course, there are other ways people can still obtain those books, IA isn’t the only one, but it’s the easiest and the most convent.

That could be useful, if ads get to the point where removing their elements manually is no longer possible. I don’t think that’ll happen for a while though, as long as were still using HTML and Javascript which downloads and runs pages locally inside of our browsers.

I think if that starts to become common people should start using tools like this as well as the use of pre-baked PDF or image rendered text to thwart it on their content.

I guess a lot of people have a strange aversion towards messing with the code of websites. Which is weird and dumb, it’s downloaded to your browser, it’s not running on their system, you’re free to mess with it as much as you want. Best to familiarize yourself with the Web developer tools, they can be an effective weapon against scammy sites which use deceptive methods like this.

I had a similar scary situation like that before where the phone number linked to the account wasn’t mine anymore. Luckily I was able to get back because I was still logged in on another computer and it hadn’t kicked me out yet, I was able to go to account settings and remove the phone number, then google let me log into the account again. Had I been kicked out of the account, I would’ve lost it for sure.

OP is a huge troll, they created their own community to hate on linux and ban anyone who doesn’t agree with them even slightly. They’re also deliberately using the auto remove on ban function to obscure the content of the removed comments from appearing in the modlog.

Yeah and since Online bank accounts can also almost always be reset if you lose the 2FA/MFA key by calling customer support, or going to your bank and speaking with themt in person, there’s almost no risk of losing access completely. It’s a service you have access to because you’re you. Something that isn’t the case with Reddit, Github, Lemmy accounts, or Masotodon. I’m not able to regain access after losing those 2FA solutions by virtue of being myself, they treat you just like the attacker in those cases. Really not worth it there, both since what is being protected isn’t worth it, and the risk far outweighs it.

That’s a great way to lose access if your device gets lost, stolen, or destroyed. Which is why I’m against and will continue to be against forcing 2FA and MFA solutions onto people. Unsurprising since Proton is optimized by Valve specifically for playing games. Crossover, Wine, and Whiskey are more general purpose. They will work fine and can be optimized and tweaked, but Proton will work better out of the box.

I think now it’ll just run it through proton if a native linux release isn’t found. At some point they seem to just have enabled Proton support by default for games that support it. It’s only for games that have a non-functional linux Release that you have to mess with them.
