Got tired with it. Fired up ytdlp( it was complex for me. So I used an android app called ytdlnis) and downloaded some music. I can’t do it in one day so still downloading.
🖕 music streaming . welcome offline music.
Welcome to the club chap!
Being doing half online and half offline, but mostly offline! I also own vinyls and CD’s.Don’t forget that yt-dlp is not only for YouTube, it supports many other sites as well.
My strategy is to grab 120k versions of music I want right now, using yt-dlp with Bandcamp. Then, when BC does their Bandcamp Fridays, I buy as many of the 320k versions that I can afford.
Also, check out https://squid.wtf/ if you want higher quality and better selection. I have pretty good luck with the Qobuz servers when I can’t find something on BC.
As others said, don’t forget that the purpose of all this is to fuck the corporations, not the artists.
My wife occasionally sends me TikTok videos she finds interesting. I don’t have the app installed because I can’t be trusted to not end up scrolling for hours, and TikTok’s website is pure dog shit. Because they want you using the app.
Anyway, turns out yt-dlp works perfectly with TikTok 👍🏽
I had no idea about the bandcamp Fridays thing, definitely noting that for later
Just remember to pay forward. Go to local music shows, buy merch from the bands you like
I just canceled Tidal and set up a Navidrome server, and I’ve probably spent more on bandcamp and such lately than 2 years of that subscription.
So I can’t say I saved anything cost-wise, but having more control over my library is absolutely worth it. Realistically a single direct album purchase goes much further than streaming the same album anyway.
I hate how Navidrome won’t just take a folder as an album and forces you to get all the data right or else
Yeah it’s a bit annoying, I wish it could just edit metadata directly instead of having to go through something like beets or picard
Sends me back to Jellyfin every time
And dont feel bad for random rights holders of dead musicians or musicians who are already filthy rich. If your music taste is limited to taylor swift and some up and coming indie artist make sure the whole budget goes to that up and coming artist…
Just give them cash money if you want to support. Merch is just trash generating activity
I’ve ended up with a pretty decent vinyl collection doing this. A lot of artists sell record releases on their merch store.
I haven’t added much to my record shelf over the past few years, but I did the same while shifting to my own hosted library and buying what I can to support
I know it’s ownership status is murky at present, but I still mark BandCamp Fridays in my calendar. Being sure to download anything I buy straight onto the NAS
Soulseek is nice. Community of people sharing their music libraries with each other.
When I was listening to obscure krautrock bands which were nowhere to be found on Spotify or YT Music, Soulseek came to rescue. Also, funnily, it is easier to get flac from there than 320kbps mp3 of various albums. The former is more ubiquitous there.
Nicotine+ is an open source client for the soulseek network.
Somehow it’s the only old-school P2P network that’s not only survived, but still thrives even today. So many rare songs on there. It turned 24 years old last month. All the others from the same era (like Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, etc) are long gone. ed2k is still around but mostly dead.
The chat rooms are also old-school unmoderated chat rooms, so expect the worst of humanity to be in there.
If you have a home server, slskd is great. It’s an alternate Soulseek app that’s a server with a web UI.
In my experience in the cesspool of the chat lobbies it’s mostly anti-lgbt neo-nazis but they do have decent music.
The chat is useless most of the times. The users troll each other and the unmoderated nature means racism is quite common as well. That being said, there are the odd decent folks as well. I had a decent conversation with a guy once there and he even donated 5 days of Soulseek privileges to me; sadly these type of conversations are forgotten in the cesspool that is the chatroom there.
Lol, I hear ya.
Thanks for the Android app recommendation.
It’s sadly pretty hit or miss if you’re behind a VPN. Same for ytdlp tho.
You are damn right. I totally forgot vimusic was having issues and was no longer maintained, so I switched to a fork named ViTune, which is not without it’s flaws, but works pretty nice overall
RiMusic is another fork. I love its UI https://github.com/fast4x/RiMusic
