      Yeah I don’t understand this approach. Aren’t fruit flies already on everything? I can’t imagine they’re spreading from one person’s house to another and becoming this big of a problem.

        This is a specific species of fruit fly from southern Asia that was brought in on produce that was disguised to avoid inspection. They are placing bait to attract the males so they stop reproducing, which they’ve successfully done before. As long as the quarantine is respected, the infected fruit shouldn’t be in contact with others and shouldn’t spread the infection.

        The fruits are safe to consume, and they’re allowed to process them and sell the transformed products, but not the fruit directly to avoid spreading the flies.
