Could have sworn I saw some articles saying it’d get better in 2027. Let’s see how long it lasts before we see “it’ll be bad through 2028”. This is going to become the new “Due to higher than normal call volumes…”

Capitalism can’t function when the competition has to spend 5 years building a multi billion dollar chip fab.

      Buddy, five years is nothing…

And the crunch started in 2019, more than five years ago.

The real problem is coming tho:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASML

It is the largest supplier to the semiconductor industry and, as of 2026, the world’s only manufacturer of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machines, which are required to manufacture the most advanced semiconductor chips. As of January 2026, ASML had a market capitalization of approximately $527 billion, making it Europe’s largest technology company and one of its most valuable companies overall.

They are the only ones who can build the machine that goes into the building youre worried about.

That is the shit that right now js impossible to compete against, and the Dutch have it because of instead of constantly playing catch up, they leapfrogged. If that Dutch company doesn’t sell you their machine, the building your talking about is pointless

The only way to beat them, is someone else takes the short term hit to leapfrog them.

That iswhat capitalism needs to function, a constant cycle of leapfrogs that leaves corporations in the dust so new ones have space to grow. When we prop up outdated corps, it doesn’t work

And right now China is trying to catch up with that technology. They might be lagging today, but they are a huge market, and they will eventually catch up, maybe not completely but enough to be competitive.

Plus their LLMs need a lot less hardware resources for inferences.

Don’t forget that all US frontier models are operating at a huge loss, because if they need to charge market rates their market will shrink significantly.

So this GPU crunch is forcing Chinese labs to innovate and find clever ways to achieve higher intelligence with constrained resources.

And cloud and computing cost will only go up now, due to exploding hardware prices, which will make the whole business model of the US frontier models even more unprofitable.

More like 25 years building a multi-trillion dollar fab just to get close to the same production rate and quality.

And, ladies, there is also a long line of you wanting to suck my enormous dick, so if you want in, please fill out the application and I’ll notify you of any openings in my schedule, the memory maker CEO continued.

This self-serving corporate propaganda doesn’t deserve to be posted.

[Edit: Apologies to OP, the article itself is actually quite alright.]

You don’t have a customery law right to memory. This applies to most things, really. The shortage definitely is real. The consequences may be Chinese memory makers getting to participate in the market. High profits are bad for many sides for it causes upstarts to get hungry and gives them a foothold in the market.

Yup, this is a golden opportunity for China. There’s a few hurdles left, but if they can clear them we could see this as the start of China absolutely dominating the memory market and these greedy morons are handing it to them on a silver plater.

They aren’t particularly greedy or morons though. It’s not like they can print more memory than their machines can print and their running full bore.

And getting new printers is expensive and very time consuming. Increasing production is simply put impossible.

If this were sustainable though, you’d see the scrambling to bring up new capacity. They’d be breaking ground all over. Because it’s not like they don’t have the money right?

Even if this was sustainable and they did scramble to build new fabs you would have to wait to around 2030 to see any production. And prices would have to grow much higher to finance that bonanza. Writing memory chips is done most efficient to make memory filthy cheap. It still is somewhat affordable considering the die area.

And they probably don’t believe in sustained demand through the next 15 years. Memory prices always have been in flux and those that over invest in times of booms are exiting the market bankrupt. It’s among the most cut throat industries.

Yes, I don’t disagree. But they aren’t, and that should be telling. If AI was as advertised, they 100% would be starting build out right now. Because it would be replacing everyone and their product is central to current wasteful processes. They know it won’t. But are happily riding the bubble for the moment.

Making Hay while the sun is up isn’t particularly evil. Sell those shovels. Everyone is quite aware of the potential of a crash. What are they supposed to do? If they were to sell their RAM below worth ai could just gobble it up on the free market anyway.

Edit: Oops. I was wrong. This is actually a pretty legit article.

        spoiler

        The shortage definitely is real

Of course it is, the question is if we should devote news space to uncritically printing what self-interested parties say.

If someone had definitely been murdered, you wouldn’t run a brief article titled Bitch totally deserved it, murderer reports that just repeats what they said.

        That’s stenography, not journalism.

Seriously. I got a steam deck and a 5ish year old tower. Between the two I got as much power as I’ll need or want for a while. I might pick up a used steam machine at some point, but where I’m at now… I can play about anything I want and I have a big backlog. I might need a new laptop in the next year or two, but it doesn’t need a discreet GPU or >16gb ram for my use case so I can cheap out on it a little. Outside of that, I’m ready to just watch this insanity with a a big ol bucket of 🍿.
