I drive the shittiest car until it can’t be fixed anymore and then move on to the next one. I don’t care if people think I’m broke. I’m not spending $300 a month or more not even counting insurance on a car. The US car finance bubble is massive. I’ve that pops, look out. You are going to see banks sale repoed cars for pennies on the dollar.
Because like most people I make the occasional trip that is more than 50 miles. It doesn’t happen often, but it happens often enough that rental cars become extremely expensive.
Most EV battery chemistries like being kept between 20 and 80% SOC, which means you are left with 120 usable miles. The extra capacity allows either for days when you can’t charge or a day when you need to drive a bit more. It is also needed for some headway when the battery does get degraded, cold days etc.
But you are right, the battery pack cost is still too high for a 10k, 200 mile car.
That would require a 30kwhr battery which alone would cost $4000. Average daily commute is 53 miles round trip. So why 200 miles range.
No one will buy a $10000 car in USA because no one wants to be seen driving a poor car, they would rather go bankrupt with debt.
