The Marines Corps has launched an investigation after the California Highway Patrol said shrapnel from an artillery shell, fired during a live-fire demonstration touted by the White House, struck a law enforcement vehicle.

No injuries were reported when an artillery round “detonated overhead prematurely” during Saturday’s 250th anniversary celebration for the Marines Corps at Camp Pendleton, the highway patrol said.

But at least one of its patrol vehicles, on hand to help stop and divert traffic on Interstate 5 through the base during the demonstration, was damaged, the highway patrol said in a statement Sunday.

I can assure you that cops can arrest military members…

And that since US military isn’t supposed to act on US soil, yes, cops can go onto a military base to stop them from firing live artillery rounds into civilian populated areas.

But even if it wasn’t ok, you do it to keep your citizens safe, then fight the fallout in courts.

How fucking bad is Civics in highschool these days? I’m getting the feeling from this thread that it hasn’t even existed for a decade.

      1. Cops don’t stand much of a chance against actual US Marines.
      2. Most cops are probably all for this show of force, it’s kinda right up the pigs’ alley. So I doubt they’d be super enthusiastic about arresting those Marines, especially in a circumstance where it’s not super clear what law they’ve broken (I doubt most cops know anything about military law or laws governing the military, since they likely haven’t taken any civics classes since flunking out of high school).
      3. Heaven forbid cops go in there, things get violent, and Trump uses that as an excuse to retaliate or invoke the Insurrection Act. He’s already on a hair trigger, something like that would almost certainly send him and his base over the edge.
      4. They did take action to keep their citizens safe, by closing down the roads near the base and diverting traffic away from potential danger.

Look, I’d love nothing more than for a bunch of bad ass good guys to go in there and slap cuffs on anyone involved in this little “celebration”. Unfortunately we live in reality and not an MCU movie though, so they had to do the next best thing.

Do you think there’s zero risk of shots being fired if a bunch of police show up on a Marine base and start slapping cuffs on soldiers?
