  • it’s situation dependent for sure but I listen for junk jargon most of the time and then do root cause analysis like questions on it. like trying to find the answers to asking why to everything they say. why does it work like that? Does it support xyz? why? why… . Gotta do it right so your coworkers are in on it. there’s a uncomfortable laugh when you know you hit the mark.

  • As a System Admin, I totally feel this. I fucking hate vendors and their bullshit marketing. In generally during the times that I have to deal, I will usually hear them out. But if the rep is annoying I will start the Q&A with questions that are designed to destroy their presentations or expose how little they know about their products. Good sales reps know how to react but bad ones just dig it in deeper and it becomes a show.

  • more power to you. don’t get me wrong I think it’s great keeping old hardware going but I have access to a large cache of old hardware (at work we have a defunct computer museum. More Apple II’s then anyone could want) and it’s generally not worth fixing because there’s always another collecting dust just around the corner.

But if you were going to use this old ps2 with a ps2->usb dongle for a daily driver it’s probably not worth it after soldering and cosmetic detail

  • i knew a couple Russian born women in the IT world of Washington State in the 1990s. One was very much like the woman described here. She ultimately changed careers because she couldn’t vibe with the work culture and her appearance caused unexpected attention. No doubt she was amazing to look at and sweet but very reserved. The other lady was also beautiful and knew it could be a distraction so she just made sure she was in charge so it wouldn’t become an issue. That meant changing to fit the work environment. She became very outgoing and dedicated to being a top performer so she could move up and ensure she would get respect for her work and also use her appeal to get the extra advantage.

It does boil down to fitting in and willingness to change. If you can’t be in the team spirit you can’t join the team.
