I don’t think it will be Chernobyl or 9/11 level, but I do think an epic fuckup with potential casualties is going to set AI back ten years. And maybe by then we’ll have figure out our shit enough to make it not destroy society.

I worked at a place that used a Pick - D3 based ERP system for decades. They employed like the last three D3 programmers in the world (two were children of the other).

While I was there we had a major major moonshot project to replace it with a D365 solution.

(No, it didn’t improve anything, but it sure cost a lot and came with big ongoing costs)

I believe it was the 2006/7 Seattle New Years or 4th of July fireworks that had been rigged up to orchestrate by “the latest microsoft technology” and the thing refused to execute and they rebooted the machine three times before someone just gave up and went and hit the firework triggers manually. Most people are pretty sure it was a wide beta version of Vista.

It’s the pages. It’s all the JavaScript. And especially the HTML5 stuff. The amount of code that is executed in a webpage these days is staggering. And JS isn’t exactly a computationally modest language.

Of the 200kB loaded on a typical Wikipedia page, about 85kb of it is JS and CSS.

Another 45kB for a single SVG, which in complex cases is a computationally nontrivial image format.

Sure, google play is a standard part of android, but you don’t need to have it, though you do need SOME kind of app installer. Samsung ofc has its own. Kindle Fires used their own and didn’t have Google Play iirc, but you could install it yourself.
