  • I thought this was an article, but I’m glad I checked it out. It looks like a really very well put together course (too comprehensive to call it tutorial). With guides for people who just want to learn part of the stuff. Had no time to dig deeper, but if you (want to) selfhost and are active in building resilience go have a look.

  • I’m in my 40s and I feel very tired. My bones are rattling already, way too early. Migraine once a month. I used to think I’m depressed, but really I’m not, just tired. And soo many of the people I know feel the same! Some put it down to long Covid, some say it’s the vaccines, some call it chronic fatigue, some call it other things. But many are tired. And angry, because when I was very young I fought against environmental destruction, grownups told me to stop or go to jail, and look where we are now, while the very same thing is still happening!

For me it’s the polycrisis: the knowledge that things are most probably going to get worse for many people before they get better. Like some bad vibe in the background, while one still has to try to survive every day, which gets harder and harder. I’m earning half of what I used to while everything is twice as expensive, go figure. And I’m one of the lucky ones, with a setup that enables me to work less hours than average.

Also someone mentioned CO2 one of these days, and not to forget the heat - that might be why my brain really doesn’t work very well anymore.

  • I have very little tech. Last I bought was over a year ago, a refurbished Laptop because I needed Windows 11 for work. There’s two more laptops, one bought used, the other new over 10 years ago. Both run Linux now. I’m waiting for my ancient phone battery to inflate enough to bed my little head on it and sleep and never read another notification!

I used to fly drones, back when it was done for fun, not war. I bought so much stuff, not a week without some shit from China (drone racing causes a lot of damage and there was always new, better gear to have!). Gave it up because I considered it unsustainable - so much trash, so much shipping, disturbs birds, bad fire risk … and these days it seems wiser to not be associated with drones. Since then I have gradually turned into quite the Luddite. I am very careful about the tech I permit in my life because it adds what I call a layer of bullshit between me and my direct experience of the world around me.

  • Yes it is, at least an important part. I’m buying very little in general, and it’s either second hand or local most of the time - when I have to order things for repairs, farm or household, there’s enough smaller online shops in my country or at least another European country. I despise big brands, big retail, big anything and try to stay away.

I’m blocking ads - and when I happen to see one on a friend’s screen I’m confused - this is what people are putting up with between trying to read an article or listening to their music?

  • The bit about the farmers is true. I live in one of these areas and our animals graze lands that were abandoned by the original owners who emigrated to the city or to abroad. And the build-up of organic mass on abandoned farms gives a lot of food to wildfires that might otherwise be mild. The government has its part in this though by encouraging the planting of ‘match forests’ of pine and eucalyptus.

The spraying bit, at least where I live, is complete bullshit. There’s laws in place that one has to clean their land, and they are still in place. The cleaning mostly happens with fossil fueled brush cutters. Municipal governments however love using Roundup at the side of the roads, it’s so nice and easy! Firebreaks by spraying is utter bullshit anyways - when you spray, the surface plants die off and leave plenty of organic matter to burn.

Only in the first year. Be patient and stubborn and after a few years you will have learned enough about the needs of your plants to grow veggies more reliably and consistently.

I still buy the ‘cheap crops’ - potatoes, carrots and onions because I’m still not growing enough of these. Everything else, including fresh aromatic herbs every day, comes out of my garden - at the moment it’s plenty of tomato and aubergine, cucumbers, courgette and green beans.

This is why I started using seed mixes. I throw a mix of different seeds on my garden beds. I get a diverse and more resilient plant community and can learn how to use the new climate change seasons to the best of my abilities. This is also the only way I manage growing carrots and beetroot that never wanted to grow when seeded separately.

Usual mixes contain carrot, beetroot, dill, coriander, parsley, turnip, radish, linseed, sunflower, maize, cherry tomato. Plants like non-cherry-tomato and cabbages I tend to plant when somewhat grown.

Disclaimer: can be problematic with some plants that want very specific seed depths, so use at your own discretion.
