Technology@lemmy.world•Discord cuts ties with Peter Thiel-backed verification software after its code was found tied to US surveillance effortsEnglish
15·19 days agoI dunno. The current state of the world might be making me more conspiracy-minded, but this feels like it was always part of the plan.
Introduce surveillance tech that Peter Thiel can use to spy/sell/whatever, announce that you’re using it, expecting people to get angry, and now in the 11th hour, after harvesting all the data they get to announce “we’re removing the evil software! We’re the good guys again!”
I recognize that the current state of affairs is having me see demons everywhere, but I just can’t bring myself to give discord a pat on the back.

242·1 month agoI’m not an economist, so here’s my ass talking, but I don’t think your example scales out. I think you’re making the mistake of equating the stock market to the economy. It isn’t.
Not everyone wins in a failing economy. If one billionaire makes out, three more lose money.

6·1 month agoThe hard part about the erosion of anti-trust laws over the last two decades is it’s really hard to do anything without supporting Amazon due to the sheer amount of things they own.
And even if you made the effort to avoid everything here first-hand, supporting a company whose backbone runs off of AWS ends up supporting Amazon second-hand.
