I don’t see a scenario where google or the likes would be allowed to fail. So moot point.
Hypothetically it would open a window for open source services to sneak in.
Middle term? The phasing out of personal computers, and moving toward a system of servers/terminals where noone owns software.

If someone wants to misunderstand you they’ll do so no matter how hard you try to accommodate them .
Reddit was unusable way before the last scandal. Main problems being arbitrary, opaque moderation, astroturfing, low-effort posts, bots, general meanness and negativity.
It got to the point where it felt like you were more likely to interact with a bot or a propagandist than a normal human being.
Reddit is an advertising platform masquerading as social media.
It’ll probably happen here too, but it might take a while.

I think it’s a survival reflex. People pick up on popular trends, and follow them so they don’t get lynched. It’s hard to unlearn this kind of conditioning, even if you move to a relatively safe environment.
They get to police other instances that way, I guess.
When I’m in this situation I use a fresh (disposable) profile, it’s usually third party cookies or trackers.
