ive always enjoyed The Man From Earth, a movie about a bunch of people sitting together in a room talking about one of them being a 14000 year old biologically immortal cave man. its such a fun idea and they spend almost the whole time just talking about it with no flash backs or anything. ill admit some of it is a little hokey. one time i watched it with a group of friends and one of them said he wished he could have the time back lol. i still really like it, just dont watch the sequel. its so stupid idk why they bothered to make it.

i can see that youve had some coolaid. i hope you can stop drinking and start recovering. a lot of what you said is gibberish, but throwing more data at machine learning models has been shown to result in diminishing returns, and doesnt change that the technology is inherently fallible. it might get very close to 100% reliable, but the hallucination problem will never fully go away. thats not the end of the world, but it requires machine learning algorithms to be paired with more deterministic tools to be sure of results. it happens with our own brains too, which is part of why we invented math and computers in the first place.

i dont think ive ever used a speach computer interface that wasnt hot garbage and misunderstood half of what i said unless i talked to it really slow like it was an idiot. pretty much every time it would have been faster to use the tactile interface. i dont even have that much of an accent compared to generic american.

the greatest power of machine learning algorithms is the source of its greatest drawback. they are essentially heuristic models of something, constructed in a way that they are much cheaper to execute than a traditional algorithmic approach. this cheapness results in error, which for a lot of applications is fine because you can refine/check the result with more accurate tools, but it also means you can never just trust it like you can with more traditional tools. this problem is baked into the technology so theres no amount of scale that will make it go away, as we’ve seen time and again with LLMs. failing to understand this is the mistake most people make when it comes to “AI”, and results in all kinds of bad decision making. but in the hands of people who understand the limitations, machine learning can truly be a game changing technology. not chatbots though those are fucking stupid and i hope they go away when the bubble bursts.

we have hair all over our bodies. most of it is vellous hair though so it isnt as visible. we just have far less terminal hair than other primates, but the hair density isnt that much lower. as far as the head hair growing long, its not that its unnecessary its just for different purposes than most animal fur. head hair is primarily social, and people like people with long hair, so theres a social benefit to having nice head hair that can grow long. its so ingrained that being completely bald is socially isolating to some extent, especially for women.

i realize im completely out of touch with kids lives these days, but its hard to believe its really that bad with chatbots in school. like it sounds like hyperbole, so if its really that bad the next few decades are gonna fucking suuuuck

to be fair the overviewer effect has been romanticized and played up by people who literally spent their entire life training and competing for the chance at a few hours or days cumulative time in space while pretending for the deciders and teams of doctors that they arent just normal flawed people like the rest of us. astronauts basically have to buy in to the overviewer effect as one of the things that makes all their sacrifices “worth it”, and part of trying to convince themselves is convincing others that its a real thing most people will experience. its more of a placebo effect in reality, though im sure there are people who genuinely felt it. bezos just didnt have to work for it at all so he has no incentive to buy into the hype, total lack of empathy and compassion aside.

totally. my latest ex is pretty socialist and anticapitalist, and i agreed with them on pretty much everything they said, but they drank the coolaid on using classical communist jargon to talk about stuff. half the time they would use definitions for words that were, to be generous, at odds with commonly accepted definitions. then they would get pissy and the discussion would devolve into semantics because they would only accept those definitions, while i was trying to use the normal definitions because of fucking course i would. so would almost everyone else. so in order to talk to them about government or politics without causing some kind of misunderstanding i would have to read a bunch of communist literature from the 1800s. i confronted them with the fact that this is a problem for the movement in general and they should be more straight forward with their words, but they just got pissy again.

it really sucks as a situation because theyre right, they just cant fathom that you cant expect people to read a bunch of old ass books in order to understand wtf theyre saying. add to that the jargon has been coopted and memed to death so every conservative gets triggered like a sleeper agent hearing the code word to execute their mission, we should probably abandon it and just talk in simple practical terms people can understand.
