If I see AI generated images on Google Maps, Yelp, websites, menus, etc I immediately pass on the restaurant. I have no idea what restaurants think showing fake images of food is going to convey to it’s customers but if they can’t get photos right then they probably can’t get proper food storage and handling correct either.

I think it would be a problem because the scrapers are hammering all types of websites from small forums to reddit with tens of thousands of unique ip addresses at a time. Websites that have neither the money, hardware, or protection had to figure out solutions really quick or suffer what is essentially a constant ddos attack. This is the reality of the web now, it’s just an incredibly hostile place.

If an AI company ignores robot.txt exclusions and scrapes a site, then turns around and sells that content as a service, is that unauthorized access?

Just about any forum thread that goes on for pages ends up in an argument. I think this can be avoided with strict rules and users who reinforce the culture.

As far as reddit goes I find the larger the number of subscribers to a subreddit the worse it gets. However depending on the topic of the subreddit even a niche small subreddit can be toxic in some way. This tracks here as well.

I would like to see more discussion about an artificial technical or skill barrier needed to participate on a website or service. This might sound elitist but keeping “normies” out goes a long way to helping keep the discussion quality high. Even having something as simple as an “ugly” more text based interface helps.

Japan has always had some of the most aggressive copywriting laws. It’s why there is very little archival or preservation efforts there.

You could make a zim file out of it and share the zim file. I imagine it would be quite large though.

For me if it is not possible to scan something non-destructively then it is acceptable to destroy one copy to share with many. It is not acceptable to destroy a book for non-preservation purposes.

Also they are probably destroying many copies of the same books over and over.

They are killing Google earth desktop application.

Still plenty to be pissed about though. As someone who does archiving it’s still enraging because they are destroying thousands of books not for archival where you destroy one copy to provide access to all, but to copy the book, rewrite it, and sell it back to you.

There’s now less copies of said book, it wasn’t archived, they stole that content, and are now selling it back to you. People will then take this stolen content and act like it’s something they created and then try to turn profit. It makes every copyright argument the publishers have ever made look like a joke. Why do publishing companies even exist?

Colorado has a ton. I couldn’t find any images showing all of them though, just a couple collections of older plates.

There is a website archive program called kiwix. It takes archive files in the zim format and allows you to browse the website offline. Kiwix has lots of wikimedia archives you can download or you can create your own archives using their different software tools.
