  • I think I saw the video of it, they did it by holding a blow torch to it.

But many videos like that are misleading because the person filming it doesn’t know how blow torches work. They always hold the torch RIGHT up against the thing they’re trying to burn, but you barely get any heat when you use it like that. You have to hold it a few inches back, right at the tip of the inner jet. That’s where the hottest point is.

  • I’m not in IT, just a lowly office grunt who is forced to use Windows on their laptop. I know most people here have forgotten that 99% of the working world has to use Windows, so let me remind you how much it sucks.

It doesn’t matter how you change the laptop power settings, Windows will look at your settings and then just do whatever the fuck it wants when the lid closes.

    Sometimes it goes to sleep

Sometimes it stays powered on and quietly overheats in your laptop bag.

Sometimes it completely freezes up and forces you to hold down the power button.

Sometimes it just logs you out and does nothing else.

Sometimes it will go to sleep, but the moment you open it back up it decides what you REALLY wanted was to restart.

Changing the settings has no effect on what Windows decides to do.

I know people on this site like to sit on their gilded Linux throne and sneer at all the lowly peons forced to use “Microslop” instead of their clearly superior, self-hosted, FOSS, Linux distro; but it is a real problem with Windows laptops.

  • Baltimore’s comeback has been phenomenal. Decades of an (admittedly deserved) reputation as a shitty crime infested city have made people and the media turn a blind eye to the massive strides they have taken in recent years. It’s seriously like a whole new city. It’s also not getting talked about a lot because a lot of their success has come from their mayor enacting a lot of socialist policies, and we can’t have the public knowing things like that are a viable solution for reducing things like crime, drug use, and homelessness.

Seriously, Baltimore is a hidden gem these days. It’s a city that’s seeing massive success and regrowth. The whole place just feels alive. Obviously, there are still some areas that are problematic, just like any major city; but the streets are now cleaner and safer than most cities it’s size, especially in the US. On the one hand, I wish more people were talking about it, because it is one hell of a success story. On the other, I also kinda hope it keeps getting ignored because I don’t want people to flock to it.

It raises it exclusively for the Costume Institute at the Met, which the group that preserves historical clothing. I just… Fuck. Are you really serious? How the hell do you look at that amount of money, look at the people starving on the streets, and conclude that this is a worthwhile function. Thats just fucking insane.

Sorry, we can’t afford to build new housing or addiction centers, but thank God we can continue to preserve an evening dress from the 1940’s. That’s truly what matters in society.

I’m sorry, but I do not think that raising money for high fashion is in any way important given the current problems the world is facing. It’s like asking for donations for fancy new curtains while your fucking house is on fire.

We do not need high fashion to survive. If every fashion designer dropped dead tomorrow, I promise you society would not crumble. We need healthcare. We need housing. We need our basic fucking needs met. Until that time, I will call events like this a collosal waste of time and money.

  • “pEOple WeRe jUsT mORe ActiVe iN thE PasT”

I call bullshit. Like sure, in the early 1900’s and before, people were more active. But in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s? We had cars. People still used them a lot instead of walking. People still chose to sit and watch TV, or read, or listen to music. People still worked in offices and spent the majority of their day sitting. The average number of steps between a person back then and today is really not that different. Maybe a bit higher, but no where even fucking close to explaining the obesity epidemic.

Claims that the extreme increase in obesity is simply due to increased sedentary lifestyle just fucking reeks of lobbied attempts to shift the blame from the real problem.

It’s the food, stupid. High-volume processed bullshit with low-cost additives and filler ingredients SWARMED the shelves and replaced nearly every good product with unhealthy convenience with a longer shelf-life. Our portion sizes didn’t even change that much, it’s just the quality of what we’re eating has dropped tremendously.

You can’t even fully escape it by trying to only buy fresh food. Modern fruits and vegetables have been bred to be full of sugars and starches. Raw chicken is pumped full of salt and preservatives, sometimes making up more than 30% of its weight.

They are poisoning people and then blaming them for the consequences.
