Shit like this is why monopolies and oliglopolies don’t work. I hope people complain AND jump ship in big enough droves for this to change. Self-hosting and the old fashioned “buy your own music permanently” option are good too.
I don’t use streaming services, I just buy MP3’s (or AAC’s on iTunes or whatever they’re using nowadays, it’s been a while) and keep them locally and on the cloud. Never liked most Streaming Services’ recommendations anyway.
It’s true. It’s why I feel that Mastodon will never replace Twitter. It’s too much of a left wing circlejerk / bubble, and they’re actively hostile to even moderate viewpoints. much less actually conservative ones.
I’m probably in the minority in this, but I believe that even people I don’t agree with should have a platform and be tolerated as long as they’re reasonable and willing to compromise and show respect, as long as they’re not racist nazi nutjobs.
The world isn’t exclusively made up of one set of ideas, and you shouldn’t shut out 75% of all viewpoints just because they don’t agree with yours, imo.
I don’t see how this works in the long run, if they have to put paid corporate drones in charge of moderation. Wasn’t the entire point of Reddit that they don’t have to pay moderators?

I think it’s a smart move. I like my G502, but have learned that ambidextrous mice are more for me. I get soreness if I only use my right hand for mousing all the time.
Given how much of a douche he’s being (and only because he has organizational power, and not because he has people skills) in the event of a disaster, he’d probably be one of the ones to bite it first, or to be sent on an mission for expendables, to be honest.
When you can’t just wave around money or org chart power to solve your problems, then people will start showing how they really feel about you. The way he’s running Reddit into the ground shows that he’s not a good leader, and the way he’s pissing everyone off right now by following in the footsteps of a huge failure (Musk) who’s also a jerk is just proving that he’s an idiot AND a douche that wouldn’t do well if society went awry.
That’s why I deleted my actual Facebook account, it really did give me the impression that the company was Cyberstalking me. They knew stuff I did not tell them or put down anywhere in any of the data forms they gave me to fill out. I didn’t upload any pictures, I barely did much of anything, yet somehow they seemed to know everything about me anyway.
I eventually made a new “account” a few years later and left it completely blank and filled out nothing but my name… and yet they still guessed quite a few things correctly, including who I knew in real life. So damn creepy. I only use that new account for log in synchronization for games and apps that don’t have any other means of access. I wish I could get rid of it too, but it’s a necessary evil for certain edge cases.
Ah, the Windows approach. The few times I worked with PC Repair shops, backing up everything and reinstalling the OS was the go to for most “repairs”. Especially since it was faster and cheaper than just researching all the issues and repairing them the “right” way. Although to be fair, if the OS is borked enough, backup + reinstall IS the right way.
I upvoted you, but I think some people just downvote and move on not because they 100% disagree with you, but because they don’t quite have the time to post a detailed reply, and they’re probably hoping someone else does on their behalf, which they will upvote if it’s close to what they’re trying to say.
Not enough hours in a day to type out a detailed response to a downvote (or even upvotes) when you have so many other things on your plate. I’m guessing they were trying to say something like, “I didn’t choose to leave decentrazlied platforms, I’m still on them. Everyone else did, I had to follow them if I wanted to keep in touch with my family and friends.”
But that’s just a stab in the dark, honestly.
Underrated reply. Twitter is definitely a place where a bunch of people follow a small group of famous people and content creators almost like lemmings. (The irony that lemmy isn’t like despite users being called lemmings isn’t lost on me)
Mastodon is a bit better, but also strangely seems to be focused on big names and groups as well, just different ones and to a lesser extent. It’s one of the reasons I spend less time on there and more on Kbin / Lemmy.
On the positive side, it’s from Mastodon that I learned about Kbin and Lemmy to begin with.
That’s what they’re hoping, but what they’re probably going to find is that “eat the rich” might become more than a metaphor, and that once people with the guns and muscles realize that they don’t have to listen to the rich anymore…
They warned us even back in the 70’s that it was bad, then it’d suddenly get worse all of a sudden with little to no warning as things snowballed, but of course the oil execs just tried to shut up their own scientists and block them from influencing congress instead of listening. Even though they were warned that the threat was “Existential”.
TLDR: He doesn’t forgive anyone who sins, he forgives those who repent. Repent not meaning “feeling sorry” as many seem to explain, but actually meaning “to turn away” which means changing fundamentally as a human being. From a bad person to a good person.
Someone who doesn’t change and act good most of the time isn’t repentant, so isn’t forgiven. So basically, you prove it with your actions and how you live your life, not with just words only. By this measurement, Republican “Christians” aren’t repentant and so aren’t forgiven.
Not a Christian anymore, but I used to be for a very long time. Sidebar: “You will know a tree by it’s fruit” AKA you’ll know what kind of person someone is by what they do. Anyone who’s even skimmed the bible (especially the new testament) would easily understand that most conservative “christians” aren’t Christian at all, but rather like the Pharisees (phony religious types) that Jesus constantly argued with and condemned.
Other note: Sikhs actually live the way Christian claim to. I could easily make a “hard to swallow pill” meme which said: “Sikhs are better Christians than actual Christians are.”
It’s slow, but I’d argue that the quality is better. So that kind of makes up for it a bit, imo. And being slow means more people can just browse everything Federated on the front page (of K-bin at least) and get into new stuff they wouldn’t have considered before.
This is why I use Firefox. I honestly don’t think that a browser engine monopoly is good for the world. Single point of failure for everyone with no alternatives is very bad if something nasty happens.
I think the creators of WINE said something similar about one of their reasons for creating WINE. Wish more browsers would use Gecko.

What would happen if someone changed their real name to Beefsteakcowboy? I’m actually genuinely curious. I think some of the malicious compliance types actually would, to be honest.
Other people have made good points, but one I’ve noticed is that there’s no advertising or profit motive (so far) and there’s also no leadership that encourages dark patterns like increasing negative engagement through encouraging stuff like doomscrolling or starting or continuing arguments.
I’m on Kbin, and I like how by default all the notifications are turned off. So people aren’t automatically told to respond to every little thing they participate in. If they really care, they have to manually go back on check on things they wrote about or were engaged in. Makes it less likely that people will argue endlessly, lowering the quality of posts and replies, and derailing them with long subthreads of off topic discussions or arguments.
Not so sure about that, I feel like average people are waking up to technological bullshit like this more and more every year. Yeah there’ll still be an overly high amount of idiots, but I’ve learned that even older people can change and question things like this.
You can only get so many “We’re giving you 2 free years of identity theft protection because we got hacked and your personal information got stolen.” from big companies like your cell phone company, credit check company, etc. before you’re like “Hey, anything I put online can get stolen by criminals…”
Even if you’re a tech-unsavvy type. At some point the light bulbs turns on and you put 2 and 2 together.
