Point of order - the electrical grid can be really handy as a navigation aid when walking; it rarely changes (though, perhaps sadly, some long established routes are being buried here in the UK) and is fairly/very visible. Whilst the power line running down your street might not help, the line of towers across the local hillside might be the difference between wandering lost for hours and a fast route out. Map the heck out of it.

Dude, get your B12 levels checked. Was feeling old and tired, so I went to drs for something else, he ran bloods just to make sure. Came back ok except B12 deficient. Now I get a B12 jab every 12 weeks and top up with high dose B12 pills every day after 4 weeks. Tiredness gone, cold feet at night gone, visual migraines gone grumpy old git moods gone. Oh and fucking around in a good way is way more on the cards!

There was no mold - the crack wasn’t there long and there was a relatively thick adhesive bed which stopped the water getting to the cement board.

Sadly the (correct stuff - we rebuilt the bathroom side of the wall when we moved in) wallboard had cracked for some reason so 5 minutes to yank out a tile and stick in a new one turned into a mission - chasing the crack in the wall board, cutting the damaged bits, repairing with new pieces then replacing 4 tiles instead of one.

It hasn’t cracked again so I must have done something right (or the wall has decided to stop moving)

What’s the moral? Do not expect it to be a simple job. If it turns out to be simple, fix it, get a beer and chill. You will probably need to get a bit more involved than just replacing the tile.

The T82 extremes are what we use at work… We have 10 of them and, despite being used by generally incompetent users, seem to survive day to day abuse in a high school. We have had them for nearly two years and have no casualties yet. Other schools in the area also use them - with no reported issues.

I know a couple of multi-band, so not specifically pmr, Baofeng users but can’t comment on their ruggedness or longevity other than to say I haven’t heard bad things.

Another popular brand to look at might be Hytera; possibly a bit out of budget for you. We did look at those, instead of cheaper handsets, but price won in the end.

I am a Motorola fan. Used to use their VHF kit back in the day and it took a lot of abuse.

At work we have their averagely rugged yellow things T82 iirc that work out about €35 each

At home, for the goblins, we have a pair of yellow Motos T72 iirc similarly rugged €60 the pair.

Both models have good range and are easy to set up. Work ones do group programming so you program 1 bung the rest on programming mode and transmit the config. Boom. 10 radios programmed identically in less time than manually doing 2.

They are just about as bullet proof as the cars are self driving. Dunno why anyone might think that they would actually be bullet proof, given Musk’s track record…

Can you boot the install media when the laptop storage is installed?

If so, you can use gparted from the install media to clean the storage device and start from scratch. That might help.

You should be able to tell what mode to install the os in from the boot mode of the install media.

That is odd. However iirc it is an option in the bios.

Fwiw telling grub to uefi boot will not work if the boot device doesn’t have uefi support (and trying to boot in bios mode from a uefi disk fails as well… Been there got the T-shirt)

To get the install media to boot you could try removing the laptop storage…

On all the lenovos here hitting enter when the bios displays the Lenovo splash screen gives a menu that allows you to get at the bios or a boot menu.

You have to be a bit careful cos it’s on a countdown, paused and resumed by the enter key… And you have to get it timed right.

Yeh - it’s just the Arubas are much more sensitive to slightly dodgy connections. Connections and wiring which worked with their predecessor Ciscos just fine is persona non Grata in the Aruba universe.

With cameras they just won’t talk to them even if the port is set to 10mbps rather than Auto. Stick an unmanaged switch in the way and they work fine.

One thing I have found is that FS.com sfp+ Aruba compatible modules work just fine which saves a packet!

We have an extensive Aruba estate here (managed for us by the local authority). You have to be careful about licenses for management software. The authority weren’t so there are issues… Though that may be authority incompetence rather than an Aruba issue.

The other thing we have noticed is that they are very touchy indeed about 10mbps connections (cameras often need an intermediate unmanaged switch), and also will drop so-so 1Gbps links back to 100mbps at the drop of a hat…
