Game preservation group Codebound has dumped two prototypes for The World is Not Enough for the N64. The near-final prototype European version includes features like a debug menu that unlocks all levels and gadgets, as well as enabling invulnerability. An earlier version from 1998 consists of 10 out of the game’s 14 levels, along with a different user interface and placeholder assets.

These prototypes provide an interesting look into the game’s development process and will likely be of great interest to fans of both The World Is Not Enough and its predecessor, GoldenEye 007, which was highly influential in the 3D FPS genre.

You can find links to a YouTube video about the discoveries, as well as the prototypes themselves, in the original article.

What do you think about The World Is Not Enough’s place in N64 history? Do you think it deserves more recognition?

I had that game, and I really liked it but only after I stopped comparing it to Goldeneye and played it for what it was. The multiplayer mode wasn’t great, but was still fun. For the most part, I just treated it like a single-player game and we’d always switch to Goldeneye for PvP until Perfect Dark came out.

The one thing I absolutely loved about multiplayer in this game, though, was the sticky grenade. I was such a bastard with those (they stick to the enemies / other players). I’d always play as M in multiplayer (I thought, incorrectly, she was the Oddjob of this game in case you were wondering exactly how much of a bastard I am when playing PvP). Friends would see a little old lady run by, think I didn’t see them, and boom: stickied.

Edit: I’ve been watching the “Let’s Play” of TWINE for the last 2 hours. If you’re interested…

Pretty spot on. It was a fun game, but when it came out I was hoping for it to feel like Goldeneye 2, which it didn’t.
