I own a house in the midwest and recently got a spirit level for some repairs. However, I don’t stay here in the winter - I go south where it’s warmer. Can I leave my level here in the house? temps will probably get down to -30 or so.
While vodka technically freezes at -27C (-16F), alcohol solutions rarely freezes in the normal sense. It generally forms a sludge, and doesn’t crack the bottle. It should be safe to store in the cold.
TIL, don’t know why I didn’t realise spirit levels are called “spirit” for a reason - it’s not colored water inside 😭
Heres a neat fact. In German it is called a “water scale” (Wasserwaage), so I also have never thought twice about what kind of liquid is in there.
The freezing point of ethanol is -173.5°F. so I’m going to say it’s safe.
