Not my intent. I’m just struck by the idiocy of the moment. A planet in gross ecological overshoot can only save itself by agressive degrowth and our reaction to this situation is to re-arm globally so we can fight over the remains of a dying civilization.
Yes the US is by far the worst offender. Not just for their massive military overspending, but now added their status as an unreliable partner and non-adherent to any rules based order. US overspending for a time allowed other countries to underspend during the long relatively peaceful post WWII period and more so post cold war.
That’s all undone now. NATO, Russia, China and everyone else are now embarking on major re-armament programs. Even Canada the perennial underspender is re-arming like there is no tomorrow. ಠ╭╮ಠ
I mean, Canada borders the largest military on earth which has just gone full fash, so I doubt they have a choice. I blame America for having a peacetime military so big that Trump doesn’t have to do the arms buildup Hitler did.
Just TBC-- my understanding from historians is that post-WWI Germany indulged in major military building at some point, years before Hitler came in to power. So, it seems there was indeed some parallel there to what we have today, just not nearly as much, since the USA has been actively shoving its might around since the days of Cuba’s war of independence.
