Perhaps a little beside the point, but this is the problem with the “Your advertisements are selected by the algorithm” retort when someone complains about distasteful (usually porn) ads.

Yes, ads are targeted, but if the algorithm knows I’m a 35 year old man, I’m going to get ads with sports and hot girls even if I’m gay and hate sports. That does not mean I was surreptitiously watching football behind my own back.
