Dude, I had never even HEARD of this guy’s name prior to his death. What is going on here!? Why are people freaking out. Am I that out of touch?
Even my liberal wife was aware of who this guy was. Was anyone else like me?
I know who Ben Shapiro is. But Charlie Kirk!? This entire time both the left and the right either hates or adored this guy? What are you all surfing on your cell phones!?
I only ever knew him from his JDV-adjacent tiny face memes, and never by name.
I knew him because of the memes that distorted his face to look like “Butthead” from the cartoon and the “change my mind” meme. I didn’t know how ingrained his shitty answer-as-accusation or racist dogwhistle was in right wing circles.
I knew who he was, but just grouped him together with all the other manosphere shitspinners.
I still don’t know who he was. Just that many people were deeply unhappy with his existence and that he was perceived as far right. I also don’t care.
I heard about him once before when he said that Finland shouldn’t join NATO because they are too ”russian”. Well you can’t expect knowledge from an uneducated nazi.
I learned about him from South Park, just trying to make his nut
I’d never heard of him. Or Ben Shapiro. Online shit talkers are boring on average.
Yeah, I’ve never heard of the guy and people in America are treating him like a messiah, watched a few clips and he had some really terrible ideas, I don’t see the appeal to be honest.
I too watched some clips after his murder. He reminded me of the mentally resident I had when I worked at a group home. The resident thought he was sent by god to save humanity and that we were keeping him from fulfilling his holly mission.
I knew who he was from the meme, and I knew he was some sort of alt-right influencer, but other than that I couldn’t have told you much about him. Honestly still can’t. I don’t care for politicians or anyone in that circle of influence.
I have friends and colleagues all over the political spectrum. Guess which ones really don’t like it when I say “can’t we all agree that they all suck and just get along?” Yeah, it’s the conservative/authoritarians. I mean yeah, the liberal/progressives who fight for us are more aligned with our — that is to say, those of us on Lemmy who lean left — views might be better, but they still exist in a grey area, they still do what they need to to get ahead. We accept that those things are necessary but I don’t think any of them are saints. But on the other side? They believe their leaders can do no wrong, and that is worrying. But they love when Trump does bad things to dark-skinned people or the LGBTQ+. They love him for the things we despise him for, from the child predator shit, to the attack on the country almost six years ago, the felony convictions, and all the piss poor decisions he’s made in office.
Same. No clue who he was…
I was aware of the “change my mind” meme. I put it down to being British, so less aware of USA political figures.
The amount of posts and discussion about him getting shot is way out of proportion to his level of fame/influence, especially over here.
The change my mind meme is a different guy lmao calling him that is almost a meme itself at this point. Kirk was the Turning Point USA meme where it had some onion-esque statement and a picture of Charlie on it with his face constantly being shopped smaller and smaller each time
Brother why are you only talking about this now? It’s very old news at this point
The US House just passed a bill yesterday to memorialize that person. This is current events.
The power of propaganda. They are using him as a mascot to push censorship laws online.
I literally had no idea who he was until the campus videos of the shooting hit Lemmy. I’m in the US but don’t regularly follow US media sources because gestures vaguely. Lemmy is also my only social media at this point, everything else has been deleted, so when something pops up here, I go digging through the Guardian or El Pais to get an idea of what’s going on.
I will say, I had the absolute delight of taking all the wind out of my deeply religious and conservative coworkers sails by innocently asking, “who’s Charlie Kirk?”, when they were discussing a moment of silence idea and a poem one of them wrote about him. Of course I knew who he was at that point, but I enjoy being an agent of chaos in a small southern town lol (send help!).
a poem one of them wrote about him
what the actual fuck is wrong with people
Holy shit, I love you wind taking abilities. I too had no idea who he was but thankfully don’t have to deal with confronting propogandized family members.
Getting out of reddit and US centric socials/media does remove a lot of trash you don’t need to know from the feed. You can’t avoid some, when they get through, and filters don’t catch them, but it’s significantly better.
Lemmy and Mastodon FTW.
