Direct link to the paper: Pulse-Fi: A Low-Cost System for Accurate Heart Rate Monitoring Using Wi-Fi Channel State Information
It uses a signal processing pipeline to process CSI data fed into a custom low-compute Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network model.
Neat!
If they can use this to measure infant heartbeats inside of mother instead of a strap on monitor, then it would make pregnant women everywhere rejoice. Also probably the nurses that have to deal with placing and readjusting the straps to get a good signal.
TIL that they use a strap on heartbeat monitor inside the birth canal (womb?)
The strap goes around the belly area, though now I remember it also measures contractions. So there would likely still need to be a way to do that. However, that part was a lot more flexible in its placement. The heart monitoring was a like more finicky. So the strap might need to stay, but it would be a lot easier to deal with.
I wonder how the world governments are going to use this against us.
