It’d be great if they were toppled and some form of competent leadership and “normalcy” (when was the last normal period that we’d like to return to even?), but with violence comes further instability, death, imprisonment, etc. Ideally we can do everything non-violently within the system, but that hasn’t really worked so… I don’t know…

Absolutely that’s true all over the world. However in many dictatorships there are also plenty of well-fed people. Not as many as in a free society of course, but just because it’s a dictatorship doesn’t mean every citizen is starving.
