Uplifting News@lemmy.world•EU "Chat Control" Twist: Commissioner Sides with Parliament Over Governments – Boost for European Parlament’s Strong MandateEnglish
7·11 days agoThe uplifting news is that even someone in the European commission (unexpectedly) prefers the less privacy-invasive version the parliament wants, not the one the council wants.
somewhat oddly, in the real world, a clause like this would make the program no longer free and open source software

Uplifting News@lemmy.world•Peanut Allergies Have Plummeted in Children, Study ShowsEnglish
2·22 days agoThat is interesting. I have wondered before why I regularly heard and read about peanut allergies in US media and US Internet forums when I’ve never actually encountered anyone with one here (in central Europe). This answers that question…
I don’t see where I said anything that contradicts anything in your comment.
If Google is their default search engine, they must at least be tech-savvy enough to have changed the search engine in Edge, or installed another browser (probably Chrome).
Which “non-techy people” are we talking about here?
Nowadays some people only use smartphones or maybe tablets, and they might not know that. But most non-techy desktop users still use Windows and they certainly ought to know the default browser (and its search engine) on their OS, I would think.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Clock but the PM quit and was replaced halfway through the project. Handover instructions: "Make the clock hands show the current time"
52·25 days agoWhat does that even mean…? If you know of something specific that is superior about analog compared to digital clocks, I’d like to hear it.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Clock but the PM quit and was replaced halfway through the project. Handover instructions: "Make the clock hands show the current time"
95·25 days agoPlenty of people older than Gen Alpha very much prefer digital clocks too. I can read analog clocks but it takes me several seconds to convert it to digital time (which is how my brain thinks). As far as I’m concerned, analog clocks are a relic of the past and it’s a good thing to abolish as many of them as possible.
The FSF has a page dedicated to this exact question: https://www.gnu.org/distros/common-distros.html.en

111·26 days agoWhy do I want this? There are already many browsers available, and this one isn’t even (apparently: yet) FOSS, so why should I be excited about this one?

Linux@lemmy.ml•What you do with your windows button on your keyboard?
2·1 month agoKDE uses “meta” to refer to the Windows key. Emacs uses “meta” to refer to the Alt key. You are correct that GNOME calls the Windows key “Super”.
This causes some confusion, obviously we Linux users don’t want to call it the Windows key, so the best solution is to call the keys “Super” and “Alt”, those are unambiguous.

obviously it’s a remote service, so you don’t directly control it unless you run it yourself, but the website links to this repo https://github.com/gugray/rss-parrot so the code does seem to be available under a free license (I have not tried to run it myself)
