This is definitely up my alley, I gave up on keeping all my media in my torrent client indefinitely for seeding because of the performance, so I’ve long dreamed of making some way to reconnect loose files back to torrents so I can seed them.

Seems I could maybe build something on top of this? I tried running magnetico for a while (going so far as to add postgres support to help it scale) but it quickly grows far larger than I want to manage.

My next idea is to make a file scanner that maintains a list of file paths and several common hashes, then do a dht crawl and only save stuff that matches. Then I can hopefully automatically add and remove torrents to a client that has read-only access to the files as needed (remove if plenty of seeders, keep for a while if no or low seeders and rotate through prioritizing stuff that needs seeds)

I’m wondering if there’s some useful overlap between what you’re doing and my goals but I think I need to dig into it more.

Dust and jank you say? Behold, my old basement homelab when I rented just outside Boston with a very permissive landlord who agreed to let me have Comcast gig pro fiber pulled into the basement, running off an outlet I installed without asking on a free slot in our breaker box. The dust was terrible, the rack was a hodge podge, I had to put up that sign because maintenance guys kept plugging their power tools into the UPS when I wasn’t around and tripping it. But Comcast fucked up the billing and the 2gig + 1gig symmetric internet is still active to this day for free, which I left behind minimally working for the next tenants after parting out the rack. The tower by the side was a friend who wanted to colocate on my fiber, and I had some fun stuff like a slide out vga console. I also pulled Ethernet into every room, most of them installed with nice wall plates all bundled down to the rack, so with a house full of gamers, you could have multiple people pulling a gig on a game download without anyone stepping on anyone else’s toes.

Yeah I’m more talking about everything they do in addition to make the non-premium experience more painful. The incentive is to make it as annoying as people are willing to tolerate with dark patterns and little irritations. That kind of thing is entirely done on purpose, and I think it’s gross to have to capitulate.

And this is very evident whenever you’re outside the lemmy / technically skilled bubble, on reddit and many other places, whenever the topic of YouTube ads / premium come up, a surprising proportion of the comments will be to the effect of “just pay for premium” and “premium is so worth it” or “yt premium is the most valuable subscription out of them all”. People don’t seem to care that so much of the value of premium is avoiding a problem entirely fabricated by YT.

Apparently red/green colorblindness is the most common. Also, if you pick a dark enough shade of green and a light enough shade of red, they’ll appear the same in black and white. Someone might assume that the darker is red and the lighter one is green and might get it right most of the time, but looking at just one thing by itself you would have nothing to compare to.

And then there’s me with a 9800x3d with a low profile cooler in a fractal ridge. It only throttles under synthetic tests so I just say fuck it and let it run at whatever temp it wants to run at.

I think the warning you might be thinking of is that a breaker can fail to pop if an inverter/generator is on the same circuit as a high wattage device. Since some energy would go directly from generation to device, the breaker will only see the “net” energy consumption. So if the generator puts out 1500W and the device decides to draw 3000W, a 15A breaker only sees 1500, and won’t trip even though the device is pulling way too much. If the breaker was sized for the wiring, then the wiring to that outlet could catch fire due to the breaker not tripping. That’s the main reason I know of why a generator or inverter should be on a dedicated circuit, to force the energy out one breaker and in another, so that the breaker can see an accurate measure of energy and trip when necessary.

Generally that’s fine and I agree, but one edge case that people overlook that I think is worth mentioning (and maybe what gp heard about and is trying to articulate) is that having an inverter or generator on the same circuit as a big energy consumer means that the breaker wouldn’t see the total energy being used by the consumer, and so it might not trip even if the consumer pulls too much wattage. That’s the main reason I know of why power sources should be on their own breaker - so it doesn’t hide power from the breaker but forces it to go out the generator circuit breaker and back in the consumer breaker so it can be protected properly.

Yeah I’ve tried those but it seems like such a hack. Weirdly, the one handed “pull screen into reach” doesn’t allow you to swipe down across the notifications bar to open notifications, in that mode it only registers swipes that start from below the notifications bar. And the floating button gets a little unwieldy since it overlaps with the volume popup. And in the “show notifications” mode, the button opens notifications but doesn’t let you close them (once you press it twice for the “control center” it no longer does anything)

Not to mention it doesn’t really help with the phone itself being uncomfortable to hold. I’m trying my best to vote with my wallet, but that has meant sticking with a Pixel 2 up until a few years ago, and the Pixel 5 was my “only 2mm taller” compromise - I completely overlooked the fact that the Pixel 2 screen starts like 1cm from the top while the Pixel 5 screen starts nearly at the top. The Pixel 10a is almost 10mm taller, so I’m not sure if I’ll be sold on it.

I actually bought a OnePlus 6 something (t?) at one point fully intending to give in to a bigger screen but I hated it and returned it.

I don’t use a case and I use Lineage. I’m not really concerned. I already need to crop the top of the screen in developer settings just so that I can reach the notification bar, I’m not really enthusiastic about getting something even bigger.

My *arrstack DBs are part of my backed up portion, so they’ll remember what I have downloaded in my non-backed up portion.

Same here, ~30TB currently but my personal artifacts portion is only like 2TB, which is very affordable with rsync.net, which conveniently has an alerts setting if more than X kb hasn’t changed in Y days. (I have my Synology set up to spit out daily security reports to meet that amount, so even if I don’t change anything myself I won’t get bugged)

I do something similar for transmission, though I put it all in a script that I mount into the container so my command is just VPN_PORT_FORWARDING_UP_COMMAND=/bin/sh -c "set-transmission-port {{PORTS}}"

I think it might actually be photoshopped to look like a print, because that’s the same picture that’s on the Wikipedia page for Jesus Nut, with the same hand, background, and shadows, except on Wikipedia it’s obviously a metal part. I spent way too long comparing them trying to figure out if they shopped a 3D print over the real one or colored and textured it to look like a print, and I think it’s the latter.

I only lament the potential loss of future HDR DSNP webrips 😔 but at least we’ll still have HDR from UHD rips

The most notable difference is that meshtastic has range in the order of miles. At least 1 mile even with bad antennas but with other nodes nearby to repeat your messages, 20 miles is not hard to do.

If you tried BlueStacks and androidstudio and those don’t work, and you don’t have access to an old android device, then you could try something like BrowserStack - I’ve occasionally used them to test websites in specific combinations of OS and browser version on supposedly real devices. They have an option to test android apps, and you may be able to transfer your apk or paste in a share link to try it out there.

I think they give you 30 minutes free, but I haven’t tried the app testing (since I’m a web dev) so idk if it would be excluded from the sign up bonus. The price for a single freelancer is $19 month to month.
