And who is responsible for funding the CSIRO? I worked there for about a year and I’d still be there if it wasn’t a contract. They develop so much great stuff and just give it away. Which is kind of the point for a government agency. Imagine of WiFi was made by a private company.

How can we make governments think long term again? All they care about is winning the next election and that means giving the biggest tax cuts by slashing the most budgets.

Nah that isn’t new. That’s been going on since the dawn of democracy.

Conservative governments always de-fund everything. Lador hasn’t had much of a run in the last 30 years.

I’d like to see the ABC and CSIRO get guaranteed direct funding through something similar to medicare with the medicare levy. Medicare Levy is 2% of earnings. An infinitessimal portion of that would turn the tap back on at the ABC and CSIRO.

I think we levied facebook et al and squandered that revenue on poor struggling murdock reporting.

Sooner or later we will have a Trump style government that will accelerate the trend of hollowing out these amazing institutions.

Not much point in advancing science when we all know we’re cooked. Sooner or later a handful of people will own everything and control it all from inside their fortresses while the rest of us deal with collapsed and poisoned ecosystems, so why wait?
